    Lu 05H9 Pioneered Cotton Marking Breeding In China

    Lu 05H9, a new variety of safflower marked insect resistant hybrid cotton, was approved by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee.

    This variety has pioneered the marker breeding of cotton safflower traits in China, and it is also the first case in the world.


    According to Wang Liuming, a researcher from the breed bred adult, Lu 05H9 safflower marked insect resistant cotton has been cultivated for 12 years. Through distant hybridization, the HB safflower character of wild Baker cotton has been pferred to the cultivation of insect resistant hybrid cotton.

    The new variety has pink blossoms, and the base of the petals has a large purple and red spot. The cotton fields are pink when they bloom, and there are no other variegated flowers.

    At present, other cotton varieties grown in China are either milky or light yellow flowers. Only after pollination do they become red, without basal patches or basal spots, so there is a mixed phenomenon of red and white flowers, either from single plant or cotton field.

    The phenomenal characteristics of safflower mark make it easy to distinguish pgenic cotton from this mark and ordinary cotton. The identification right of hybrid cotton is handed over to farmers, which is more conducive to regulating market order and protecting farmers' interests.

    However, with the development of the cotton market, hybrid cotton varieties are becoming more and more serious. The purity and quality of hybrid cotton seeds can not be effectively controlled.

    Because of the unlimited growth habit of cotton plants, it is difficult to distinguish between different varieties under the colony condition. The counterfeit behavior of seeds mixed with F2 generation in the F1 generation of the hybrid cotton occurs frequently in the market, which not only directly damages the interests of the majority of cotton farmers, but also makes the performance of hybrid cotton not fully manifested in large area production, thus reducing its proper production level and affecting the healthy development of the hybrid cotton industry.

    Lu 05H9 used safflower as the marker trait, and studied the hybrid varieties with high heterosis with Bt insecticidal genes selected by both the female parent and the male parent. It provided a convenient and fast way for the detection and control of the purity of hybrid F1 generation seeds, and became an important breakthrough in Hybrid Cotton Breeding in the the Yellow River River Basin.


    It is understood that in the regional trials of new cotton varieties in the country, Lu 05H9 showed a significant increase in yield than the similar varieties. In the two-year regional trial of the the Yellow River cotton basin, the average yield of seed cotton and lint was 247.8 kg and 102 kg per mu respectively. The yield increased by 9.5% and 9.6% respectively compared with that of the control cotton variety linmian 15, ranking first in the same group. The demonstration showed that the variety had good seedling emergence, strong seedling resistance, wilt resistance, Verticillium wilt resistance, high resistance to cotton bollworm, high yield and stable yield, and good fiber quality, so it had good popularization and application value.
