How Does CEO Make Major Decisions?

    2010/11/23 13:23:00 64

    CEO Decision Making

I do not know Mr. Barack Obama, but in the new book "Obama's war" by Bob Woodward, the president has met with strong opposition from the army and other advisers in handling Afghanistan's withdrawal. This is just like any awkward situation facing CEO who has been divided internally. Your wishes do not get the support of the people around you. The New York Times and Washington Post have published an excerpt of the book, which is scheduled to be released in September 27th.

Suppose you are a need to make a major decision

    CEO

You, chief executive, must take charge of the plan of action to solve the problem of US withdrawal from Afghanistan by Obama.

The only thing that needs to be determined is how to withdraw troops.

At the same time, under the guidance of military and intelligence thoughts, your top level think tanks advocate increasing input strength, expanding mission scope, raising budget, not reducing it.

How do you deal with this dissonance? How do you implement the whole organization?

    policy

    ?

Obama's approach may lead to any CEO or any manager who may encounter difficult situations.

    1. after attending numerous meetings and listening to numerous suggestions and choices,

    Obama

Announcing that he had made a decision, the decision represented a compromise: withdrawing troops in 2 years after a 30000 increase in the short term.

    2. he explained his decision.

After rejecting the army's proposal to increase troop 40000 and indefinite mission, Obama declared, "I will not work for ten years.

I will not do long-term state building.

I will not spend one billion dollars on this issue.

    3. he formulated clear and realistic goals.

Withdrawing troops will not be accompanied by claims for victory or failure.

Woodward said Obama said: "everything we do is focused on how to help reduce our footprint."

Obama added: "this is an investment in our national security.

There must be no room for any change. "

    4. the military is dragging off its troops and continuing lobbying, hoping to increase investment.

Obama was very depressed. At last he said, "why do we keep convening these meetings?"

    5. Obama told general David Petraeus and Secretary of defense Robert Gates that "in 2010, we will not discuss how to increase the number of troops.

I don't want to hear, "we did a good job, Mr. President, but if we do more, we can do better."

We will not meet again to discuss how to adjust our mission.

Unless we discuss the topic of how to withdraw troops faster than expected in 2011.

    6. Woodward believes that Obama's final six page plan has adopted an unconventional approach. "In addition to its strategic objectives, the report also mentions what the military should not do."

So the withdrawal of troops has begun.

This is exactly where I like the president's approach.

Obama gave everyone the opportunity to state their views, then make a decision and firmly and clearly support the decision.

He explained the reasons for his decision.

Then he focused his attention on how to carry out the decision instead of letting his team get into a rat hole without any speculation.

His final order not only includes military orders, but also clearly shows what kind of behavior is unacceptable. This is a loud slap on the face of the army's open question.

So, put on the hat of CEO, tell us, how do you think Obama handles these problems? Remember, the president can not fire anyone who disagrees with him, even though their actions seem to be somewhat inadequate.

He must also make the best use of the resources already available in his hands for a better result.

Has he done a good job of management?
