60 Years Of Global Cotton Imports
In the past 60 years, the global cotton import destination has increased by 98 in recent 10 years from 42 in 50s, up to 106 in 90s, indicating that the textile industry is expanding globally, and the number of countries and regions engaged in textile industry is also increasing. There are also some geopolitical factors.

Roughly divided into two stages, the first 3 and ten years are dominated by Europe, and the global share of imports dropped from 67.5% to 47.6%, when Europe was still the center of global cotton imports and textile consumption.
The latter 3 ten years are mainly Asian, and the share of imports has increased from 51.8% to 71.4%. Now Asia has become the import and textile consumption center of the world's cotton.
1. Changes in major continents
Asia: from 50s to the first ten years of this century (Table 1), Asian imports increased from 868 thousand tons to 5 million 70 thousand tons, an increase of 4.8 times, accounting for the global share of the same period also increased 29.4% to 71.4%, an increase of 42 percentage points.
At the same time, Asia is also a concentrated producer of cotton in the world. It is a major producer and exporter of China, India, Pakistan and Uzbekistan. It is also a global cotton consumption center.
Since 80s, the global textile industry has gradually shifted to Asia. In the past 10 years, Asia has become the world's largest textile and garment production base, and Asia's raw cotton consumption accounts for 75% of the world's total.
In Asia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hongkong imported large quantities in 80s, and were the new textile industry at that time.
Japan's import volume dropped by 69.9% in the first ten years of this century, and the global share of imports dropped from 17.3% to 2.1% in 50s.
South Korea has maintained a relatively high import volume in the past 40 years, and imported up to 381 thousand tons in 60s, down to 265 thousand tons in the past 10 years, and the global share of imports dropped from the highest 6% to 3.5%.
China's textile industry has developed rapidly in recent 10 years, and cotton processing accounts for 35.3% of the world's total.
At the same time, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Turkey, Thailand and Vietnam, which have a large population, are vigorously developing the textile industry by virtue of their labor resources and low cost advantages.
In the past 5 years, 4 countries in China, Bangladesh, Turkey and Indonesia imported 4 million 420 thousand tons annually, accounting for 55.9% of global imports over the same period.
It shows that the global textile industry is further concentrated in Asia, and Asia is concentrating on these 4 countries.

Import volume
The decrease from 1 million 994 thousand tons to 1 million 40 thousand tons, a decrease of 47.9%, accounted for 67.5% of the total market share in the same period to 14.6%, a decrease of 54 percentage points.
Compared with 50s, the import volume of major importers in Germany in the past 10 years decreased by 76.8%, 96.5% and 81.7% respectively. Imports accounted for 1.1% of global share, 0.7% for France and 0.1% for France.
In European countries, Italy maintains a high and stable import volume and market share.

Americas: from 50s to the first ten years of this century, the import volume of the Americas increased from 170 thousand tons to 780 thousand tons, an increase of 3.5 times, which accounted for 5.8% of the total market share in the same period, and increased by 5.2 percentage points to 11%.
Mexico accounts for 48% of the total increase in the Americas.
Africa and Oceania: Africa imports less raw cotton, nearly 10 tons of nearly 214 thousand tons, accounting for 3% of the global market share.
Oceania basically does not import raw cotton.
Two. Changes in major importing countries and regions
China, Taiwan and Hongkong: China imports more than exports, and imports 96 thousand, 328 thousand, 240 thousand, 3 million 810 thousand and 1 million 703 thousand tons respectively in the 5 ten years after 60s.
In the same period, the import volume of Taiwan province was 74 thousand, 185 thousand, 309 thousand, 289 thousand and 241 thousand tons respectively, accounting for 1.9% from the global share to 3.2%.
After the return of Hongkong to the motherland in 1998, the textile industry shifted faster, and the import volume dropped from 137 thousand tons to 87 thousand tons, which accounted for 1.7% of the global share from 1.1%.
Japan: a non cotton producing country and a new textile power.
The import volume of the first 5 ten years increased from 517 thousand to 722 thousand tons, accounting for 6.6% of the total global import share, 6.6% from the import of raw cotton spinning to the import cotton spinning in the past 10 years, and the pfer of textile processing and imports.
Germany: a non cotton producing country.
In the first 4 ten years, 358 thousand, 375 thousand, 307 thousand and 335 thousand tons were imported, accounting for 9.3%, 10%, 5.4% and 5.2% of the global share, and the import volume of nearly 2 years has dropped to 5.4% tons and the total share of the global share has dropped to the lowest.

Britain: a non cotton producing country.
The first 3 ten years imported 340 thousand, 207 thousand and 102 thousand tons, accounting for 11.4% of the global share from 11.4% to 2%, and nearly 2 2 years of imports fell to 12 thousand tons, basically withdrawing from the import market.
France: a non cotton producing country.
Imports in the first 5 ten years dropped from 187 thousand tons to 123 thousand tons, accounting for 187 thousand of global share from 2% in 50s to 2% in 90s.

Italy: as a non cotton producing country, it is also an advanced textile industry in the world. It is still a country with large textile processing capacity in Europe.
The 6 ten years imported 187 thousand, 221 thousand, 198 thousand, 268 thousand, 328 thousand and 175 thousand tons respectively. The share of the global share decreased from 6.3% to 2.3%. It is the most importing country in Europe, and also a big textile producer.
The Soviet Union and Russia: the textile industry in the Soviet Union concentrated in the European region, supplied by cotton in Central Asia, and imported 79 thousand, 170 thousand, 1 million 600 thousand and 1 million 460 thousand tons in the first 4 ten years, accounting for 22.9% of the world share from 2.6%.
After the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the Russian mainland basically did not produce cotton. In the past 2 years, it imported 496 thousand tons and 288 thousand tons in ten years, accounting for 8.2% and 2.8% of the global share.
South Korea: a non cotton producing country, a new textile power, is also one of the largest importers of power.
In the 5 ten years after 60s, from 74 thousand tons to 381 thousand tons, the share of the world increased from 1.9% to 3.5%, and dropped to nearly 10 years.
Indonesia: it is one of the major consumers of cotton production.
The 4 ten years after 70s imported 65 thousand, 166 thousand, 437 thousand and 487 thousand tons respectively, accounting for 1.2% to 6.5% of global share.
In the past 5 years, it imported 460 thousand tons, accounting for 5.8% of the global share.
Turkey: in the past 2 ten years, the import volume increased by 222 thousand and 662 thousand tons, accounting for 3.7% and 8.9% respectively.
In the past 5 years, it imported 770 thousand tons, accounting for 9.8% of the global share.
Bangladesh: imports of 541 thousand tons in the past 10 years, accounting for 7.2% of the world's share.
In the past 5 years, it imported 790 thousand tons, accounting for 10% of the global market share.
Thailand and Vietnam: emerging textile nations.
In the past 3 ten years, the import volume of Thailand increased from 164 thousand tons to 403 thousand tons, accounting for 2.6% of the world's total growth from 5.4% to 5.4%.
Vietnam has imported 180 thousand tons in the past 10 years, accounting for 2.4% of the world's share.
Pakistan and India: in order to develop the domestic textile industry, Pakistan also imports raw cotton, and imports 375 thousand tons in the past 10 years, accounting for 5% of the global market share.
India is the adjustment of cotton trade, because domestic production and imports are also imported. In the past 10 years, it imported 215 thousand tons, accounting for 2.8% of the global market share. In the past 5 years, domestic production accelerated to become a net exporter.
