Lawrence Hu, formerly known as Xu Jianshu, was born in an architect's family and graduated from the costume design department of the Central Academy of Arts and crafts. He later studied in Paris, and was a well-known French fashion designer and artist Francis Droke Lang.
The museum's invitation letter praised the Chinese fashion designer: Lawrence Hu's design is "combining tradition and creativity, and has the adherence to the preservation of world cultural heritage. It is truly a model of modern top fashion design."
