Carnation - Commemorating Mother's Day

Every spring season, many countries in the world celebrate a warm holiday mother's day on the second Sunday of May. On this day, most of the children who are rushing outside need to return to their mothers, help their mothers wash their chopsticks and wash the dishes. The children give their own flowers, gifts or homemade greeting cards to their dear mothers with their pocket money, and express their thanks to their mothers.

There are many different legends about the origin of mother's day. It is said that it can be traced back to ancient Greece. At that time, the ancient Greeks held special celebrations in spring every year to commemorate Jose, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hera, Hess, and so on. In ancient Rome, the scale of the celebration became larger and lasted for three to four days. In the early seventeenth Century, with the spread of Christianity, England expressed its reverence for Jesus's mother Maria and took the fourth Sunday as a mother's day for the 40 days of religious activities held in celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. On this day, young people who are away from home will come home and bring their mothers some small gifts to show their respect. At that time, many poor people were living in helpers in wealthy families, and were forced to stay away from home and stay at home. On Mother's day, the owners will set them off and encourage them to come home to have a reunion with their mothers. With the spread of the Christ God in Europe, the church combines the celebration of mother's day with the lent of Lent in order to express people's gratitude for the spiritual power that mothers give them life and protect them from harm.

In the United States, the earliest record of mother's Day was put forward by Julia in 1872. It was during the American Civil War that Julia saw the consequences of war, death, disease and crisis, and experienced peace and equality as the most important things in the world. So she called on the women of the whole country to unite to find a way to resolve the conflict, and held a mother's Day rally in Boston and other places, issued the declaration of mother's day, and proposed that "mother's Day" be dedicated to "peace". Although her proposal failed to attract the attention of the authorities, nor did it form a formal mother's Day organization, nor did it establish a specific mother's Day date, she left valuable enlightenment to later generations. After the end of the American Civil War, Mrs. Jarvis, the director of the church school in Grafton City, West Virginia, and the mother of 10 children, who told the students about the heroic stories of the war sacrificed for justice, came up with the idea that all the heroic soldiers who contributed to the motherland and those who guaranteed the victory of the war were not those mothers who had hardships to raise their children. Their sons were infected with blood, but who knew how much pain and sacrifice they would have to bear? Therefore, she suggested that a memorial day or mother's day should be set up to give these ordinary women some consolation. Unfortunately, she died in 1905 without waiting for her wish to come true. Her daughter Anna and Weiss witnessed the hardship of their mothers and their brothers and sisters. They believed that their mother's proposal was in line with the hearts of the people. So she wrote dozens of letters to the US Congress, local governors and various women's organizations, and persuaded her mother's Church in West Virginia to hold mother's Day celebration on the second anniversary of her mother's 2nd Anniversary death, the second Sunday of May 1907. The next year, Philadelphia people began celebrating mother's day on the same day. Later, Anna and his supporters wrote letters to the ministers of the government, calling for the establishment of a national Mother's day. In 1914, President Wilson solemnly declared that the second Sunday of May, that is, the anniversary of the death of Weiss, was designated as "mother's Day". At the same time, on the mother's day every year, families should hang flags to express their respect for their mothers. Because Mrs. Jarvis loved carnations, the flower became a symbol of mother's day.

After the founding of mother's day, people from all over the world recognized it. In our country, it was gradually accepted by the people in the mainland in the 80s of last century when it became popular in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Precious jewellery, a symbol of maternal love, special love desserts, exquisite handmade greeting cards, and so on, all became gifts for mothers to show their love. Since the beginning of 1988, some cities in southern China have organized the celebration of mother's Day organised, and selected "good mothers" as one of the contents. At the end of the last century, with the increasing integration of China and the international community, the mother's Day festival has been increasingly popularized in mainland China, and more and more people are beginning to accept the concept of mother's day. Nowadays, on the second Sunday of May, Chinese and other people in other countries all over the world express their gratitude for their mother's rearing kindness in various ways.
