The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) decided in June 17, 2012 to temporarily close 350 garment factories located in the outskirts of Dhaka, until all the violence stopped, and find out the real mastermind behind the violence.

The two associations also said that if the situation had not been improved, it would be possible to call on all the Bangladesh garment manufacturers to shut down completely.

Since June 10, 2012, garment factory workers in the Ashulia district near Dhaka have started sporadic protest activities due to the lack of salary increase, blocking the Dhaka road to Tangail and Dhaka to Sylhet by rubble of bricks and stones.

Police officers tried to disperse workers with rubber bullets and tear gas, resulting in violent conflict between police and people. At least 50 garment workers were injured. The Ashulia industrial area was once a battlefield.

Police in the industrial area of Bangladesh have warned other industrial areas, such as Gazipur, Narayangani, Chittagong and Savar, to guard against the extension of workers' riots.

(Combined Garment Workers Federation) President Nazma Akhter said: the owners of garment factories should reconsider the decision to suspend business and adjust the wages of workers in order to cope with rising prices.

The requirements for Bangladesh clothing workers are now rising by 1500-2000 Dhaka from the current monthly salary of 3000-5500 Dhaka (1 US dollars to 81 Dhaka).

The monthly salary of Bangladesh garment workers in 2010 has been adjusted upward by about 80% in the fierce struggle.

The Bangladesh garment industry is the foundry of many famous brands around the world, such as Walmart.

    Zara

H&M, JC Penny and Carrefour, etc., accounted for 80% of the total export volume per year, and 2010-2011 of the total export value of garments in the fiscal year amounted to US $19 billion.
