Sri Lanka, the whole name of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is a tropical island country with beautiful beaches, mysterious cities, rich natural heritage and unique charming culture. In 2003, the output value of the industry accounted for 43% of the industrial output value; since 1986, the textile and garment industry has become the first foreign exchange industry. In 2008, the export of textiles and garments amounted to 5 billion US dollars, accounting for 70% of the total export volume of the whole country, of which clothing exports accounted for 93% of the export of the textile and garment industry. In addition, the textile and garment industry was the largest employment industry in the field of processing and production, providing direct and indirect employment for 700 thousand people, of whom 340 thousand were directly employed. Since the privatization and foreign investment were introduced in 1980, the textile and garment industry has been transformed into non state owned components through private transfer and foreign investment. Korea, China, Hongkong and the European Union become major investors. As of 2008, the textile and garment industry attracted 500 million US dollars. At present, 50% of textile and garment enterprises are wholly foreign-owned or joint ventures approved by Sri Lanka Investment Bureau (BOI), whose exports account for 90% of textile and garment exports. Sri Lanka textile and apparel exports more than 5 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for more than 70% of the total exports of Sri Lanka, exports have surpassed the competitive countries of India, Bangladesh and Vietnam, and now the whole investment is poured into the textile and garment sector. After China's accession to the WTO, textile and garment machinery has developed rapidly and its quality has improved rapidly. In the past, most of the textile and garment machinery in these countries were imported from Japan. The Sri Lanka textile and Apparel Association has decided to set up a specialized agency in Shanghai to help the importers of the country establish long-term cooperative relations with Chinese textile and garment machinery exporters and expand the import volume. With China's entry into the WTO, China's textile and garment machinery is developing rapidly and will become the main supplier of textile and garment machinery in India, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Sri Lanka.
