H&M Suspends Purchase Of Brazil Leather Because Amazon Fire Endangering Environmental Protection

Haines, Moelis Company (H&M), the world's second largest fashion retailer, said today that the company is currently suspending the purchase of Brazil leather due to concerns raised by Amazon's wildfires.

The US Vf Corporation (VF Corp) announced last week that similar measures should be taken in response to the Amazon fire. Wei Fu owns Timberland, Vans and North Face series clothing and footwear brand.

"We have decided to suspend the purchase of leather from Brazil because of the serious situation of Amazon rainforest fire in Brazil and the output of cattle," H&M said in an e-mail statement. "

The statement said the ban will continue to be implemented until there is an effective way to ensure that leather production does not lead to environmental hazards in the Amazon rainforest.

Last year, during the UN climate talks, ten large fashion industry companies vowed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, and H&M was one of them.

The 43 companies agreed to give priority to the use of "climate friendly" raw materials, and adopt low-carbon transportation. The coal-fired boiler will no longer be installed until 2025.
