Sports Giant Nike (Nike) Collaborates With Marine Protection Association
US sports giant Nike (Nike) and environmental protection organization Ocean Conservancy (Marine Protection Association) jointly signed the "Arctic shipping Corporate Pledge (Arctic shipping enterprise commitment)" to call for more enterprises to avoid shipping routes through the Arctic.
The Arctic is often referred to as the "refrigerator of the world" and plays a crucial role in regulating global temperature. It is also one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change. The temperature in the Arctic region is rising two times faster than that in other parts of the globe. Experts worry that the Arctic ecosystem is becoming more and more fragile.
Ocean Conservancy said in a press release: "due to climate change, the Arctic ice continues to decrease, which opens up the possibility of a cargo passage for previously unnavigable Arctic routes. Although these routes can shorten transit time, the increase in Arctic vessel traffic poses a great risk and may have a devastating impact on the environment. " Ocean Conservancy also points out that navigation in Arctic waters may cause other hazards such as accidents, grounding or oil spills. Global shipping now accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The signatories have promised to explore more ways to reduce global shipping emissions and to support the development of preventive Arctic shipping practice, and ultimately to improve the current and future potential Arctic and human security issues. Nike and Ocean Conservancy hope that through this cooperation, more companies will be invited to join in the pledge to prevent shipping vessels from destroying the Arctic ecosystem.
In Nike, Nike executive vice president, chief executive officer and general counsel Hilary Krane said in a statement: "in the case of Nike, everything is for athletes. We will take action to deal with climate change and let Nike move towards the zero carbon and zero waste future. We know that climate change will affect our athletes' training and competition, and will also affect their willingness to participate in sports. Through this commitment, we made a clear choice to help protect the earth and the Arctic.
Janis Searles Jones, chief executive of Ocean Conservancy, added: "the risk caused by trans Arctic routes is far greater than the benefits it can bring. We can not ignore the impact of global shipping emissions on our oceans. Ocean Conservancy appreciates Nike's approach and recognizes the real bottom line, which is to share responsibility for the health of the Arctic. We believe that this commitment will generate stronger actions to prevent dangerous Arctic shipping and further reduce global shipping emissions. "
The initial signing members of the Arctic shipping Corporate Pledge also include Gap Inc., H&M Group, Kai Yun group (Kering) and PVH Corp. and other fashion enterprises. Besides, there are also shipping companies such as Kering, China, Hong Kong and China.
