The "Chinese Era" Of Iron And Steel Industry

In the 90s of last century, China's steel output reached an annual output of 1 billion tons. At that time, some experts said that this is almost the limit of China's steel production. Chen Derong, secretary and chairman of the Party committee of Bao Wu, recalled that in just 20 years, China's annual output of steel exceeded nine times that of the limit, winning the world's output for the first time in 23 years.

In 2019, the world iron and Steel Association released the list of the top 50 iron and steel enterprises in the world, and China's iron and steel enterprises accounted for 20. Among them, China Bao Wu ranks second in the world. In the past 70 years since the founding of new China, China's steel output has been less than 1/1000 of the world's total. It can be said that the growth and development of new China is also accompanied by the rapid rise of the steel industry. China has transformed into the world's largest iron and steel producer.

In the past ten years, China's steel output has completely ended the history of short supply. In addition, China has achieved net export of steel from 2006. By the end of 2018, the total net exports of steel had been converted to crude steel of 7.1 million tons, while domestic steel has accumulated 114.7 billion tons in 70 years.

At present, China has become a country with all industrial categories in the United Nations Industrial Classification, and more than 200 industrial output ranks first in the world. The added value of manufacturing industry ranks first in the world since 2010. Wu Xichun, former president of the China Iron and Steel Association, regrets: "without these steels, the per capita housing construction area of our towns will not increase from 8.3 square meters in 1949 to 39 square meters in 2018; there will be no urbanization rate of nearly 60%; there will be no 131 thousand km of Railways, especially 30 thousand km of high-speed railways, and there will be no production of 29 million cars per year; without these steels, China will not be the first big shipbuilding country in the world, the first large household electrical appliance manufacturing country, large construction machinery manufacturers, large power generation and transformation equipment manufacturers, and it will not become the world's largest manufacturing power."

Looking at the development process of the iron and steel industry in the world over the past 160 years, the global pattern has been changing, and the focus of production and consumption has shifted several times, from Britain to the United States to the former Soviet Union and Japan, but now it has entered the "China era".

According to data from the World Steel Association, the United States occupied the dominant position in global steel production and consumption for 81 years. "From the perspective of China's steady development as the second largest economy and its market capacity, population base and economic development stage, China will surely dominate the global steel industry in a long span." Yu Yong, chairman of the world iron and Steel Association, and Secretary of the Party committee and chairman of the River Steel Group, pointed out at the 70th anniversary session of the steel industry to celebrate the founding of new China.
