More Than One Million People In The World
According to real-time data from Johns Hopkins University website, as of 3:23 p.m. Beijing time on September 29, the total number of confirmed cases of new crown has exceeded 33.36 million, and the cumulative death toll has reached 1 million 555.
The death of more than 1 million people around the world caused by the new coronavirus is a "painful milestone", the United Nations Secretary General Guterres said in a statement on the 29th. These deaths are parents, wives, husbands, brothers and sisters, friends and colleagues. The severity of the disease aggravates the pain, because the risk of infection makes family members unable to sleep together, and mourning and celebration are often impossible Yes.
Guterres said the spread of the virus and the resulting unemployment, educational disruption and dramatic changes in life are not yet over, but the world can overcome the epidemic through responsible leadership, cooperation, and preventive measures.
On March 11, Geneva time, the World Health Organization officially declared the new crown pneumonia epidemic as a global pandemic. Seven months later, there was no sign that the global mortality rate was slowing down.
In countries that were previously thought to have contained the epidemic, infection rates are rising again. In order to control the second wave of the epidemic, France, Spain, Britain and other countries have announced a number of local blockades, which does not exclude the introduction of more stringent measures in the capital and other places.
As one of the most developed countries in Higher Education in the world, the second wave of epidemic in Britain also makes a large number of Chinese students in a dilemma. Zhang Wei (not his real name) got the master's admission notice from the London School of economics and politics. Different from the practice of allowing new students to delay their enrollment in previous years, Zhang Wei was required by the university to report at the beginning of the school in October, otherwise he would be disqualified.
The number of international undergraduate students from outside the European Union has increased by 9% this year, indicating that they have not been disturbed by the epidemic, UCAS, a British university application agency, confirmed on the 28th. The tuition fees of foreign students from outside the EU are much higher than those from the UK or EU, and their tuition fees are the main source of income for UK universities.
Nick Hillman, a researcher at the Institute for higher education policy, warned that registration data does not necessarily mean that all of these people will appear, and that the drop out rate is likely to rise this year because when students enter university, they may experience experiences that are not as expected. The University of Manchester predicts that the drop out rate of international students this year may be between 12% and 61% based on anxiety such as travel safety. According to data from Coventry University, the number of international students actually enrolled fell by half in September.
With the news that 1700 students at Manchester City University were trapped in their apartments and isolated from the outside world on Friday, an outbreak of the University epidemic crisis has stunned all walks of life. So far, about 40 universities have had multiple confirmed cases and thousands of students have been isolated.
The UK University Union (UCU) wrote to the prime minister demanding that all university teaching be transferred online and that students be allowed to return home without penalty. Some university officials admit that they are worried about students asking for a refund of tuition fees or for a refund of accommodation rent.
The total number of deaths exceeded 1 million
Mike Ryan, who senior emergency expert, said at an outbreak briefing in Geneva on the 28th that the official figures currently reported may underestimate the true total number of covid-19 infections or deaths due to covid-19.
Whether each covid-19 death case can be included in the statistical data depends on the statistical policy adopted by the patient's country, whether the community death cases outside the hospital are included, or the patients whose condition rapidly deteriorates to death when they are not tested and tested negative.
A non peer-reviewed paper published in July showed that between mid February and the end of May, there were 202900 above average additional deaths in 17 countries, most of which occurred in the UK, Italy and Spain, where the epidemic was severe at the time.
At present, there are more than 33 million cases of infection in the world, and the medical evidence of heart, lung, mental and other problems in convalescent patients with covid-19 is also increasing.
According to Johns Hopkins University tracking data, as of early March, there were less than 100 covid-19 deaths per day worldwide. In April, an average of 6400 people died a day; in August, an average of 5652 people died every day.
If countries do not take concerted action against the new coronavirus, the global death toll is likely to reach 2 million before effective vaccines are widely distributed, a senior who official said.
International students in epidemic situation
Li Min (not his real name) is a sophomore at Cambridge University. During the first wave of the epidemic in May this year, Cambridge required all international students to leave school and subsidize transportation expenses according to the distance of the students' home country. Li Min also received a subsidy of more than 1000 pounds and continued to participate in online teaching after returning home.
Since the end of August, she has been communicating with the school, hoping that she can stay in China this semester and only participate in online teaching. However, the school insists that she should return to the school to participate in the study, saying that the school has made sufficient plans for the covid-19 period, and has not yet let go. Some of her classmates have returned to school, and others, like her, are waiting for school accommodation.
According to the statistics of the culture and Education Department of the British Embassy, since the outbreak of the new crown disease, only three Chinese students studying in the UK have been infected with new crown pneumonia, and there are no deaths. However, this does not mean that the second wave of epidemic can also ensure safety.
Chinese students are the largest group of international students in the UK. Last year, the number of Chinese students studying in British universities exceeded 120000 for the first time, accounting for more than one third of the total number of non EU students. At present, the total number of Chinese students studying in the UK has exceeded 220000.
In order to help Chinese students return to school in time, Queen's University of Belfast took the lead in launching charter flights for Chinese students in British universities, welcoming 369 Chinese students on September 19 with a one-way ticket price of 616 pounds. On September 21, another charter plane carrying 74 overseas students from all over the country flew from Chongqing to Manchester, UK. Hainan Airlines, which is in charge of the flight, said that by November 15, about 20000 overseas students would gather in Chongqing and take more than 90 flights of the company directly to the UK by November 15.
And the current crisis of the University epidemic may change the ecological degree of waiting to study abroad. On Friday, about 1700 students in the two dormitories, many of them freshmen, were required to self segregate after 127 new crown cases were confirmed at Manchester City University.
Students in isolation could not even go to the nearby walk-in new crown test station for testing. Some college students complained on social media about a shortage of food and toiletries in their dormitories, and a few held parties all night.
At the same time, 172 new coronavirus positive cases were detected at Glasgow University in Scotland, leading to self isolation of 600 students; 30 cases of infection at Queen's University of Belfast led to self isolation of 100 students.
The opening of school will inevitably lead to a surge of campus cases, but the response of schools and government departments has aroused dissatisfaction. The United Law Firm's initiative to challenge the students' return to school is to encourage the students to take the initiative to offer legal services to students in the UK.
On September 28th, three more British universities joined the restriction. The University of Exeter asked all students to avoid sharing a room with anyone other than their family members for two weeks. Aberystwyth University in Wales announced that it would temporarily suspend all face-to-face teaching activities.
That night, Manchester City University Administrators offered rent rebates and a 50 pound grocery voucher to the students in quarantine to appease them.
The National Union of students has warned that greater unrest is inevitable in the coming weeks and that students should receive rent rebates and refund tuition if their studies are "seriously affected".
Russell Group, which represents 24 of the UK's oldest universities, said it was working with the government to take a pragmatic approach to keeping campuses open and allowing students to benefit from a hybrid learning model combining face-to-face and online teaching.
However, Ian (pseudonym), a lecturer at Russell's University in London, said in an interview with 21st century economic report that the shift to online learning is at best part of the solution. Students are often infected not through the classroom but through social contact. The contact with school peers is one of the reasons why many young people go to university, and many courses such as art and science also need professional design However, remote teaching cannot be realized. In his view, the biggest responsibility lies with the government, which is to make the virus testing and tracking system work properly, so as to make all the arrangements orderly.
Gavin Williamson, the British education secretary, said in a speech to the house of Commons on September 29 that the government was closely monitoring the current situation and that college students might be required to isolate themselves at the end of the semester so that they could go home for Christmas.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, when asked at noon whether students should receive tuition discounts from universities, declined to make a statement. He said this is a problem for universities and students to solve.
