Vietnam'S Textile And Leather Shoes Industry May Encounter Suspension Crisis Due To Labor Shortage

Textile and leather shoes industry are the two industries with the largest labor force in Vietnam, among which the labor force of textile industry is about 2 million, and that of leather shoes industry is about 1.4 million. In addition, nearly 1.5 million people are engaged in trade and business activities related to textile and leather shoes industry. From April 2021 to now, the epidemic situation in Vietnam has continued to change in a complex way. As a result, 28 provinces and cities have taken measures of isolation and blockade to varying degrees. Many textile and leather enterprises have stopped production or have been forced to reduce their production scale, resulting in a large number of employees losing their jobs.

According to the survey results of 256 enterprises in textile and leather shoes industry by Vietnam labor relations research center, nearly 60% of workers' income decreased due to intermittent stoppage, 62% of workers had no source of income due to continuous shutdown, and 77% of workers had negative mental state. At present, the insufficient income and the fear of epidemic have made the employees of textile and leather shoes enterprises tired. More than one million workers have returned home in Ho Chi Minh City, Pingyang province and tongnai province. The textile and leather shoes industry in Vietnam, which is in the stage of production recovery after the epidemic, may encounter a crisis of suspension due to labor shortage.
