Coleman, A Former NBA Champion, Started Selling Shoes.
Many of the retired NBA stars have entered the business world, but basically they are doing big business like real estate and investment, and most of them are settled in big cities.
In 1990, Derek Coleman, a champion scholar, made a new way. He insisted on going back to his hometown in Detroit to start a business.
Coleman's shoe store, called Snyx shoes, is decorated with luxury and service. It feels like a martini bar.
Coleman pursued quality. His shoe store has not only high-grade chandeliers, but also a small fountain.
When the customer enters the door, the waiter will not only smile, but will also take them to the seats and pick them up slowly.
The price of these shoes is between $75 and $250. They also display and sell Autographed shoes and fashionable soccer shoes of famous stars such as Lebron James, Kobe and Rashid Wallace.
Many of them came from Coleman's old game of playing basketball, and many fans were eager for it.
Coleman's shoe store is not unusual for big cities like New York and Losangeles, but it is rare in such an old industrial city of Detroit.
Coleman was born and brought up in the Lin-wood and Clairmount areas of Western Detroit, where it was in ruins, and is still in a mess.
A businessman would never waste his money here, but Coleman had another idea. When he first came back here and surveyed the terrain, he said, "here it is."
Now Coleman sits in his chair and smiles and says, "you know, I've heard 101 times.
But if you can provide high quality services, you can make money wherever you are.
I hope you feel comfortable when you come here.
Everything is a challenge. I love challenges and I always love them.
Why can't shop in Linwood?
We must change the way people view it here. "
Coleman is 40 years old, retired two years ago and has been in NBA for 15 seasons.
He spent most of his career in nets and 76 people, but at the end he played five games for the pistons.
But no matter where Coleman played, he never left his home.
"Because everyone is your neighbor, there's no need to put on a rack, no matter where you are, you should have feelings for your hometown," Coleman said. "I have a high demand for myself.
I hope I can bring home the good stuff I have tried to bring back to my hometown. Why can't we have these things in our own sites?
Coleman is familiar with the grass and woods here. He graduated from the North High School in the north, and so far there are real estate nearby.
People are still used to call Coleman "Babe (baby)", this is his childhood nickname.
In order to repay his hometown people, Coleman has invested in the construction of an outdoor stadium. So far, people are still enthusiastic about making plans for him to see what he can fix next time.
Coleman returned to his hometown to start a business with a big appetite. A small shoe store was only part of his whole plan.
Coleman said: "when my career ended, I began to ask myself, what would Derek Coleman do next?"
In recent years, Coleman has bought a whole two Street property.
He also wants to open laundry, agricultural market, car wash shop and so on.
Soon after, Coleman's investment in senior male salon is about to open. Coleman plans to open a Party in the new store with friends and family from 10 a.m. to 7 pm on the opening day. Hamburgers, hot dogs and other foods will be provided free of charge.
Coleman has already opened the City League building (UrbanLeagueBuilding), and is going to turn it into a dining hall next spring.
He also plans to teach young people how to become a successful businessman.
Detroit is full of smoked hotels. The streets are covered with cigarette butts, and even fresh vegetables and fruits are hard to get.
Coleman was furious with this: "we can't buy fresh products, we can't eat fresh food at all, so we are prone to hypertension and diabetes."
Coleman was full of confidence in himself. He said, "I can always hear people talking about what they were like before. At that time, I was doing my best to play basketball and manage my family well.
Now that I am retired, I can finally do what I want to do.
We still need retail, we need grocery stores, we need to pay in cash, and we need to eat.
So basically, what we do is to provide the services we need.
