Supachai Bagbadi, Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and development.
Born in Bangkok, Thailand in 1946.
He served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce of Thailand.
In September 2002, he became the first Asian to serve as director general of the world trade organization, and promoted the Doha negotiations, contributing to the economic development of developing countries and advancing the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
In May 2005, the fifty-ninth session of the UN General Assembly appointed Supachai as the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and development and formally took office in September 1st of the same year for a term of 4 years.
Supachai advocates Chinese culture and loves chess. He wrote the book "China and WTO: changing China and changing world trade".
The pioneers of the world are pioneers: they pioneered various new schemes to solve the problems of overcrowded population and too narrow space. They showed us the ever-changing architectural styles. They also applied various technological innovations to real work and life, so that they could be spread far beyond the city.
The most important thing is that technological innovation makes every place productive -- and in the most productive cities, innovation plays a key role.
Today's cities are increasingly connected with the world in a vast network of various social, economic measures and modern technology.
This network system has countless intersection points and connections, some are tangible, while others are opposite.
Soon, it became the premise of economic growth and growth.
The global city network has pformed the relationship between economy and ecology into a new, not widely known form.
The city is fortunate enough to provide a rare opportunity for itself, but it also poses a great challenge to itself.
Urban residents are eager to get more space and better housing conditions, which have put more pressure on the environment of the city.
In the face of global warming, water shortage and the need for cleaner and renewable energy, a new concept of urban development is coming out.
Cities in the future will increasingly strengthen ties and communication, but at the same time, they will become more independent.
With the advent of renewable energy, cities are no longer as dependent on fossil fuels as they used to be, thus reducing their ecological footprint.
The production of renewable energy in cities, combined with urban land use and artificial environment, can become the key engine of urban economy.
With urban planning and technology strategy and local management, global sustainable development has also been promoted.
In terms of the ecological effects required, innovation is undoubtedly a crucial link.
In the traditional sense, the largest and most efficient way of productivity in the major cities of the world is generated through large-scale centralized production equipment and extensive distribution system.
However, in a low carbon city driven by renewable energy, a non centralized production mode may be applied, so that energy production can take the principle of proximity, that is, areas close to energy consumption, in fact, usually near energy consumption.
This distribution has many advantages, such as saving energy, and reducing flexibility in the face of natural disasters and man-made accidents.
The same treatment can also be applied to the city's tap water system.
Some small water systems in the locals have successfully applied nanotechnology to water purification and management.
Practice has proved that good planning, combined with the concerted efforts of the central, municipal and local governments, is conducive to the proper handling of environmental problems in cities.
With the concept and overall input of urban planners, urban construction, pportation facilities, energy sources, communications, sewage management and health systems will be built up, and the city will be more efficient and get a higher index of human settlements.
The challenge for planners is to integrate new technologies, urban planning and mass innovation into the creation of new infrastructure. For example, in the creation of urban infrastructure, solar and wind power generation must be maintained at a sufficient level to ensure adequate urban energy supply.
Such green initiatives have sprang up all over the world.
In order to deal with the predictable reality that the population will double in the near future and to stop further expansion, the San Francisco Bay area has planned a new infrastructure network that can concentrate and distribute water, energy, fuel and goods, and can also meet the travel needs of residents and tourists.
In Europe, 30 cities are listed as pioneer cities. They pioneered the use of hi-tech energy system. Half of them can use the "lightweight" system to pport renewable energy.
As the world turns to the development of low carbon cities, such high-tech solutions to climate problems and energy crises are aimed at starting a business for Europe.
These "lightweight" cities will be placed in the centre of the stage, and the lightweight network, the new generation of buildings and new modes of pportation will also be developed.
The city of Arabia is the first zero carbon city in the United Arab Emirates. It has adopted renewable energy from the very beginning, and it is not allowed to use cars in its territory.
Another example is the North Port Wharf in Western Australia, where about ten thousand families will settle there. In planning, it will use 100% renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic, small wind turbines and offshore wave power generation systems.
This new residential area will be high-density but suitable for people to walk; renewable energy will be fully applied to fully electrified public pport and private pport systems by using vehicle batteries.
However, in the short term, urban development will also be a complex process of metabolism. It may be an important agenda to help them overcome their dependence on resources and energy in other regions.
The relevant policies will include sustainable procurement agreements, inter regional trade agreements, and urban procurement systems, all of which are based on green certification system.
The rapid development of the city and its infrastructure will also depend on the sharing of research cases, best experiences and lessons from other cities.
Shanghai, as the host city of World Expo in 2010, is more appropriate.
It applies advanced technology to urban planning and makes it an international metropolis.
In the past fifteen years, Shanghai, a vibrant, modern city, has developed faster than any other international city and has become one of the world's economic centers.
This amazing speed of development has produced many problems and is common to other metropolises.
But if demand is the mother of invention, then this need is welcome: Dongtan is a new city around Shanghai, which will adopt renewable energy in its buildings.
It can achieve self-sufficiency in food and water through nearby farms. At the same time, Dongtan will also realize zero carbon bus and fully use renewable energy.
The agenda of urban eco efficiency is very important for the future development of an international metropolis to green and sustainable development.
In the process of sustainable development, global and local planners, politicians, environmentalists, private enterprises, non-governmental organizations and so on need to do a lot of work, especially in developing countries.
If the cities of developing countries want to become green cities, they need to make great efforts to develop innovation.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and development attaches great importance to the role of innovation in development.
We provide policy evaluation on technological innovation for those countries in need of help, aiming at establishing a policy and institutional environment conducive to innovation, thus promoting urban development.
Shanghai World Expo will become a springboard to provide more innovation and solutions for building an internationalized green city in twenty-first Century.
Therefore, we feel boundless glory for advancing this grand event and advancing the sacred goal of this grand event, "Better City, better life".
