A Big Strike In Vietnam'S Shoe Factory Again
A large strike in Vietnam's shoe factory has occurred, with about 240 workers demanding improved wages and working conditions.
In December 11th this year, 240 employees of Vietnam Haiphong shoe company all stopped working and went on strike to raise wages and improve the working environment.
The company's trade union staff said the company only paid employees 600 thousand to 700 thousand Vietnamese Dong (about 37.5~43 dollars) per month.
A month ago, the factory staff asked the company to raise wages and improve the working environment, but no concrete improvement was made.
Haiphong company agreed to raise lunch allowance on strike day, but the pay increase is still under consideration.
The company is currently working on behalf of Taiwan partners. It is the largest shoe factory in Haiphong city with an annual output of up to 10 million pairs of shoes.
Since 2000, there have been 71 strikes in Haiphong city. There are 27 strikes in this (2007) year.
