Nigeria'S Textile Industry Is In Urgent Need Of Development.
Masayoshi Masushita, chairman of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, warned Nigeria that if the textile sector collapses, it will become a stumbling block for the development of the industrial sector as a whole.
This warning message is revealed by Mr. Matsushita at a symposium organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the United Nations information network in the city of Ca.
According to statistics, the textile industry in Nigeria reached its peak 10 years ago. At the present time, the textile industry was in decline.
Matsushita gave an explanation to the warning. He said that if Nigeria could not revive the dying textile sector and provide large-scale employment, Nigeria would not develop.
Nigeria had 175 textile units in 80s, and only 25 are currently operating.
The export of textile sector has dropped from $44 million five years ago to the current US $11 million.
Matsushita said that the root cause of this situation is the massive import of frantic smuggling and inferior and low quality textiles and clothing on a large scale.
He suggested that the government of Nigeria should conduct an inspection mechanism to check the import of these low quality products.
Although Nigeria's manufacturing units produce high quality products, these low quality imports have gained a foothold in Nigeria.
Mr. Matsushita said that the United Nations Industrial Development Organization is engaged in restoring the important sector of textiles, and his proposal will be passed to the government of Nigeria immediately.
He suggested that Nigeria's economic growth and national stability conditions are necessary for attracting foreign direct investment, and it is suggested that the government formulate incentive mechanisms and development plans.
