As the second largest province of cotton production in China, the cotton area in Shandong has been reduced for 7 consecutive years, only about 1/4 at most.

Even so, domestic cotton prices are still higher than international, domestic cotton is not welcomed by enterprises.

In order to reverse this situation, Shandong has been picking up cotton by mobile phone. However, due to the high price and variety of cotton pickers, the pformation of cotton in Shandong is still long.

In October, this should be the peak season for cotton purchase. In the past years, all cotton farmers were actively selling, but this year the situation is somewhat different.

In many cotton fields in Shandong, there are few cotton dealers and enterprises to purchase them.

According to Linqing's agricultural department, because of the new low price of cotton this year, the local retail price is only 3.1-3.15 yuan / Jin, and cotton farmers are reluctant to sell, which results in a stalemate in the new cotton market.

"For cotton enterprises, this year is difficult to harvest, difficult to sell, no profit will definitely not go down."

Local cotton growers said that because this year's growth is better than in previous years, seed cotton yield per mu is about 600 Jin.

But the rise in output has not brought much joy to cotton farmers.

"The price of cotton is too low this year. It's still not as good as last year! When it was good, it was seven yuan a Jin, and last year it was three yuan, and it dropped to three yuan this year."

According to the current subsidy scheme, cotton farmers can get a subsidy of 235 yuan per mu.

But this subsidy is still limited to farmers' enthusiasm for cotton planting.

In Pingdu, the cotton in the local farmland has basically disappeared.

Local villagers say that cotton is too much trouble from planting to harvesting, and then it is hard to sell.

"Cotton is all day long, and when corn and wheat are sowed by machine, they basically do not need to move it."

Dong Hezhong, director of the cotton research center of Shandong Province, said cotton is nearly two times more expensive than corn and wheat, and the benefits are not as good as planting grain, so that farmers who have planted cotton have changed their minds.

Domestic cotton prices are higher than those of international companies.

The head of Dongying cotton grower calculated: if the output per seed per mu is 500 Jin, 3.5 yuan per catty, the output value of one mu of cotton is 1750 yuan.

Cotton needs more than 40 processes from seed to harvest. The cost of machine cultivation, harrow, cotton seed, machine sowing, plastic film and so on is counted, and the direct planting cost per mu of cotton is about 600 yuan.

Cotton is used for 25 people per mu (Times). According to 50 yuan per person per day, the labor cost per mu for planting cotton is 1250 yuan.

Not counting the cost of land contracting, the net income of cotton seed per mu is only 500 yuan.

But in fact, 50 yuan a day can't find workers at all.

Because cotton picking is very labor intensive, even if 100 yuan a day, few people are willing to come.

Although cotton prices are low, farmers' income from planting cotton is not high. On the other hand, domestic cotton prices are still higher than foreign countries.

It is understood that in the United States, the picking cost of seed cotton is about 80 yuan per mu, which is only 1/5 of the cost of artificial cotton picking in China.

Enterprises prefer to use imported cotton.

"The grade of foreign cotton is strictly carried out according to international standards, but there are differences in the grades of domestic cotton, which do not guarantee quality."

Dongying one cotton enterprise official said, price difference is still the main reason.

Shandong is the second largest province of cotton production after Xinjiang. The largest cotton planting area reaches 25 million 600 thousand mu.

But since 2008 cotton area has declined for 7 consecutive years. As of 2015, cotton planting in the whole province was 7 million 500 thousand mu.

Developing the machine to pick up cotton is a trend but the road is long

In mid October, the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, a high yield and simplified cultivation technology demonstration base of the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Nong Gao District, has 60 mu of cotton.

"This is our experiment on light weight cotton cultivation on saline alkali soil."

After introducing Dong Hezhong, director of Shandong Cotton Research Center, the cotton picker began to walk through the field, where cotton was rolled down from the plant and there was hardly any residue on the cotton boll.

"Machine cost is about 145 yuan / mu, saving 150-200 yuan per mu compared with hiring cotton, increasing revenue and expenditure by 480 yuan per mu.

However, there are only 10 cotton pickers in Shandong Province, and 2 million of them are even higher.

Although agricultural machinery has all kinds of subsidies, the actual burden still needs about 800000 yuan, plus the machine's damage to fiber length, to a certain extent, it reduces the quality of cotton.

Dong Hezhong said that at present, the northwest inland cotton region (Xinjiang) also has a larger scale of popularization and application.

However, due to the differences in production and ecological conditions and planting patterns, cotton production in Shandong province can not completely copy the mechanized production technology of foreign and Xinjiang existing cotton.

"Machine picked cotton needs not only the cotton cultivation mode to change, but also the existing cultivator and machine picked cotton processing equipment, and suitable special varieties are also lacking."

Miao Xingwu, director of Dongying Cotton Office, said with emotion, developing machine picked cotton is a trend and must go, but the road is still long.
