In the craftsmanship of the stitch
The "useless" studio is located in a corner of Zhuhai paradise, one hundred years ago as the private garden of Tang Shaoyi, a famous Republic.
In 2006, Marco chose to stay in such a lonely place. He wanted to keep away from all kinds of fame and wealth in fashion and clothing and plunge into the craft of sewing and mending.
This is a natural carved building, white walls, grey bricks, and old wood tiles.
In such a large space, the spinning, weaving and embroidering utensils were lined up, and the peasant women in twos and threes sat on their feet, and the wheels of the babbling wheels filled the room.
This is also the workshop of the useless workshops. The craftsmen are mostly textile women from the rural areas of Southwest China.
In 2006, mark created a "useless" studio in Zhuhai, aiming to be an enterprise dedicated to protecting and innovating traditional folk handicrafts.
In 2013, the studio was registered as "Zhuhai useless cultural and creative Co., Ltd.".
During this period, he made numerous brilliant achievements: appearing in the fashion week of Paris, filmed by Jia Zhangke as a documentary "useless" took countless international awards, participated in international and domestic clothing exhibitions, and opened up "useless" space in Beijing.
The most widely known is that he can make customized clothes for Peng Liyuan.
Marco designs clothes that are elegant and clean. Often a garment is designed from the design to the finished product. It needs ten manual processes such as spinning, spinning, weaving, cutting, dyeing, embroidery and so on. It takes two or three months.
This ritual process is seen by Marco as an "emotional journey" and "cloth has memory."
Countless days and nights, a group of weaver girls from Southwest China's minority areas sat on these ancient wooden looms, waving their shuttles, stepping on their feet and weaving a piece of natural cloth.
In the concept of Marco, every useless studio product reveals the love of life for producers and conveys their attitude towards life.
In the noisy era, is this kind of "anti industrialization" behavior inappropriate? "Everyone is now pursuing useful things, and things that can not immediately see results are often regarded as useless, but the value of immediate usefulness and future values may not be consistent.
I want to search for the most essential things in human nature through these "useless" creations. No matter what extent our economy and technology develop, they are still what people yearn for and remain unchanged.
Marco said.

Do not make major pipelines on the assembly line.
As early as in 1994, he was awarded the gold medal of the second China International Brotherhood costume design competition by "terracotta warriors".
She frequently job hopping among the garment companies in the Pearl River Delta, only to create her own clothing brand as a designer.
The Pearl River Delta in the 90s of last century stimulated the development of garment manufacturing with sufficient horsepower. A large number of orders from Europe and the United States raised tens of thousands of garment factories. The machines roared and workers gathered. The whole industry enjoyed the flourishing of OEM. However, the sight made ma ke feel bored: only the plagiarized printer would be more useful than the original designer.

After winning the award, mark, who served as director of costume design in a Hongkong company, finally waited for the company's hope to create its own brand.
However, the market suddenly changed, and the company laid off thousands of people.
For Marco, this is a big blow. Why is it so hard to be an original Chinese brand?
Hesitating and wandering in a well paid job, Marco insisted on finding his "brand dream".
She had once refused a boss's annual salary of 1 million plus a Lincoln car, and wondered, "why did he talk to me about this? I just wanted to be an independent brand."
In the summer of 1996 in Guangzhou, mark spent all day in Fangcun's low rent housing, full of emotion and doing nothing.
One day, during the nap, she suddenly had an idea in her mind. "You can't wait any longer, you can only rely on yourself."
She said she jumped up.
Mark can call the partners to create an exception to the clothing brand.
With the 350 thousand yuan in hand, the first clothing store opened under the agricultural and forestry road.
At the beginning, he had a hint of worry. "The last person who wants to be a boss is still the boss."
Exceptions, like a loaded projectile, have become popular in the garment market. The stores have opened one by one, 10, 20 and 50, and the speed of expansion is too much to see.
Mark also inevitably became the main manager on the assembly line, and was pressed by the "100 sets of clothing design a year, and the pressure of more than 100 stores".
Marco recalls the life at that time. "That state is terrible. The speed of expansion will have an impact on the quality of clothing and production. I still insist on the original intention of starting a business, and only want to be able to express my clothes instead of replicas on the production line."
Marco finally left the "exception" because that life was not what she wanted.
Helping traditional handicraft spark new life
After leaving the exception, Marco spent a lot of time walking in the countryside of Dian GUI Sichuan and Tibet. He contacted a large number of folk artisans, often looking at embroidered flowers, and squatting for hours.
For Marco, the countryside has boundless charm.
She was addicted to the pictures that made her heartbeat. "A woman sat in front of an ancient loom, flinging her shuttle lightly, with her feet moving rhythmically on the pedals, weaving a piece of natural cloth full of smart texture."
She is stubbornly searching for something.
Walking in the countryside enriches her mind.
Once, when visiting artisans asked, "what is the use of these things," Marco suddenly realized that he needed to open a design studio called "useless" to prove to the world that these handicrafts were not "useless" but "useless to use".
"I want to do things that may not be useful at the moment but will be valuable later. I want to give new value to people's useless things."
Marco said.
"Rural areas are not always poetic, but also backward and poor. If the creativity, design and aesthetics of the city can be combined with handicrafts in the countryside, they can not only preserve traditional culture, but also enable peasants to live a good life."
Marco wants to help his traditional handicraft shine through his own efforts.
In the concept of Marco, "useless" is not simply advocating the concept of all natural, zero pollution and handicraft, but a bridge linking the city and the countryside, for the innovation of traditional handicraft, inject fresh life breath, at the same time, it brings artistic sense to the people who love nature in the city.
Mark's understanding of "craftsman spirit" has national feelings and attachment to land, countryside and childhood.
She said that although she grew up in the city, she lived with her grandmother in the countryside for a long time. She remembered that when she picked mushrooms and fish on the river in the mountains, ninety percent of her childhood memories were in the countryside.
Many years later, when interviewed by the media, mark should ask for boxes and boxes to find pictures of the 1994 "terracotta warriors".
She found her maiden work and the present "useless" idea very much like: cloth is made of ramie linen, the wood on the armor is hand polished, all natural materials, hand-made, no traces of machines.
