Annual Global Cotton Inventory Output And Consumption

In August 13, 2019, the US Department of Agriculture released the global cotton supply and demand monthly report. In 2019/20, the final inventory increased by 442 thousand tons from last month due to the sharp reduction in global cotton consumption. The increase in the initial period was mainly due to the reduction of 108 thousand tons of global cotton consumption in 2018/19. This month, global cotton production fell by 39 thousand tons in 2019/20, but the increase in inventory and consumption by 261 thousand tons at the beginning of the year were much higher than the reduction in output. Cotton consumption in mainland China, India and Uzbekistan has also been reduced.

About US cotton data: in the month of 2019/20, the US cotton initial inventory, output, export volume and ending inventory were all raised this month. According to NASS's first annual output forecast, US cotton production increased by 2% to 4 million 903 thousand tons in 2019. As cotton planting area and unit yield increased slightly from last month, US cotton output hit the highest level in 14 years. The US cotton stocks increased by 54 thousand tons at the beginning of the year, because the US cotton exports in 2018/19 were lower than expected. US cotton exports increased by 44 thousand tons in 2019/20, and the final inventory increased by 109 thousand tons to 1 million 568 thousand tons. Cotton growers are expected to receive an average price of 60 cents / pound in 2019/20, down 3 cents from last month.
