Sports Shoes Brand Rens Uses Coffee Grounds To Make Shoes.

Rens Origina, a sustainable Footwear Company, has acquired Kickstarter (public funding platform) and has received more than 200 thousand US dollars in funding for making 100% waterproof sports shoes, which are made from recycled coffee grounds.

According to the recent blog article, the Finland company reached its 100% financing target in just 24 hours, far exceeding the Kickstarter's target of 15143 dollars, and its fund raising activities still have 26 days.

Rens sports shoes are made of recycled coffee grounds and recycled plastic.

"The process of making Rens sneakers starts with grinding the coffee into plastic particles and spinning the mixture into polymer yarns, then weaving the yarn on the waterproof membrane to ensure that your feet are dry under any conditions," the company explained on its website. In addition, coffee has a natural antibacterial property to prevent your shoes from stinking.

"Every double Rens uses waste from 21 cups of coffee and 6 plastic bottles. In addition, our minimalist design enables our manufacturing process to use less resources and reduce waste. The environmental impact of Rens is 80% lower than that of leather shoes and 60% less than that of textiles.

It says that the tiny pores produced by coffee grounds can catch peculiar smell and make the outer layer of shoes dry 200% faster than ordinary functional polyesters.

More importantly, coffee has UV protection characteristics, which means that the color can maintain a longer brightness and antibacterial effect, making it a good disinfectant.

According to the Rens website, every 66 pounds (30 kilograms) of coffee grounds can produce 100 pairs of sneakers. 6 plastic bottles are also used to make a pair of Ren sports shoes.

It also explains that less than 10% of coffee waste is used for composting or reusing. When used coffee grounds eventually enter landfill, they emit methane, which is 30 times more greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
