Star Design: Pocket Design Interprets This Functional Inspired Trend.

Pockets are everywhere in next spring and summer series. From Miu Miu to sacai, from Louis Vuitton to Burberry, here's how designers interpret this functional inspired trend.

Through the Miu Miu 2023 spring and summer series displayed in Paris, Miuccia clearly confirmed that "functional" aesthetics will continue to exist. In fact, it was this recipe that allowed her to update the Y2K style advice that she launched last spring: pleated skirts and navel tops come with oversized pockets. It is the return of this pragmatic spirit that has plagued designers such as Claire mccardell and Bonnie Cashin in in the last century. For them, pocket is a solution to free women's hands and promote their activities.

"Make your jacket your handbag" is one of Cashin's favorite phrases, when, as creative director of coach, he proposed clothes with pockets so that you didn't need to use the most traditional female accessories. In fact, starting with Miu Miu, its tech parkas have pockets on the chest, while oversized fur coats display them at the waist, like a waist bag. Conquered by functional philosophy, like Miuccia, chitose Abe has designed a collection for sacai, in which the "freedom" so cherished by the designer is transformed into rich pockets, even including a gabardine belt, which has a spacious outer compartment.

If Loewe revisited the traditional Barbour with XL pockets to add volume, Bally suggested using pockets in a pink leather jacket with metallic texture, while Louis Vuitton paired the suit with a top and miniskirt, both featuring extra large details from pockets to zippers.

Overalls and lace holsters

If functionality is a slogan, it's not surprising that overalls are a growth trend. Diesel and Isabel marant interpret it in an orange to beige palette, and complete the look with a large vest with a large pocket. In Burberry's new collection, Riccardo tisci turns pockets into lace like mini backpacks that can be worn at hip height as if they were holsters.

In the Surrealist version

There are also designs that bring the trend of pockets into the realm of surrealism. For example, for no sex and Cynthia Rowley, pockets become decorative elements on long skirts and deconstructive dresses, which are inserted in different, alternating, or even reduced sizes. Marine Serre presents the most complex version of all time: a long coat that completely covers the pocket, not only in different sizes and without any obvious order, but also with different types of closure, alternate zippers and automatic buttons. When it comes to surrealism, it is impossible not to think of the eight pocket coat that Elsa Schiaparelli conceived in 1936 from a painting by her friend, Salvador Dal í.

Hand in bag

The original palm belongs to Hermes, which takes the opposite approach to what has been seen so far: it comes up with a bag that doubles as a pocket. On the surface, it's a traditional TRAMP model hanging on the shoulder, except that the accessory has a large outer pocket that is cleverly placed in such a way as to invite hands into its comfortable interior.
