Recently, in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, the construction of Shantou International Textile City started. As "China's textile and clothing industry base city" and "China's underwear and home clothes city", Shantou has launched 108 major projects with a total investment of 32 billion yuan since 2022. In the first five months of this year, the number of industrial enterprises above designated size in Shantou increased to 791, up 5.5%, and the industrial output value above designated size was 53.4 billion yuan, up 9.1%. Shantou is accelerating towards the goal of building a textile and clothing industry cluster with more than 200 billion yuan.

However, Shantou's textile and garment industry has been plagued by the problems of imperfect industrial chain and low level of intensive development. Chen Ruipeng, the deputy general manager of the company, said that with the growth of the textile and clothing industry, the demand for yarn as the upstream of the industry is increasing, and there are few yarn manufacturers in Shantou at present.

Yu Shaofen, secretary-general of Shantou Textile and Clothing Industry Association, told reporters that Shantou's textile and clothing industry chain is complete and the supply chain system is strong, but the upstream and downstream "two ends" of the industry chain are relatively weak. At the same time, textile and clothing enterprises are scattered in various counties and districts. How to improve the industrial chain is the key to continuously supplement, strengthen and extend the chain.

In order to gather industrial strength, Shantou proposed to build the "four major projects" of global textile procurement center, textile industrial park, exhibition center, and textile and clothing industry headquarters building to promote the development of textile and clothing industry towards clustering, high-end, and standardization.

The Shantou International Textile City under construction this time plans to invest a total of 30.5 billion yuan to build two major engineering textile industrial parks and a global textile procurement center, and build a modern industrial park and industrial chain hub integrating technology research and development, production and manufacturing, product exhibition and sales, and intelligent logistics. Yu Shaofen said that the project provides a solution for the industry to solve the bottleneck problem that the production and marketing cannot be connected and the industry cannot concentrate and develop intensively. On the day of construction commencement, several upstream projects of the industry were signed, started and put into production to complement the weak points for industrial development. Among them, the green intelligent textile printing and dyeing construction project of Guangdong Rongchang Textile Industry Co., Ltd. was started, and the estimated annual output value after completion is about 3 billion yuan. "Our previous raw materials mainly rely on procurement. If we print and dye by ourselves, we can control the delivery date and quality of products by ourselves, and the production cost is expected to be reduced by 5% to 10%," said Wu Chaozao, deputy general manager of the company. Guo Pengcheng, deputy director of Shantou Municipal Bureau of Industry and Information Technology, said that the raw material supply capacity of Shantou's textile and clothing industry was weak in the past, and relevant departments focused on introducing enterprises to supplement and strengthen the chain, promoting Rongchang Textile, Tianhao Nylon and other key projects to accelerate production, and strengthening the supply capacity of raw materials such as nylon.

For the downstream of the textile and clothing industry chain, sales, design and research and development are the key points. In view of the lack of industrial innovation ability and weak brand effect, Shantou strives to promote the upgrading of the industry to innovation and high-end. This year, Shantou set up a global textile and clothing brand designer incubation center to enhance the collaborative communication and ability of product design and development in the industry. The textile and clothing industry headquarters building under construction will also integrate brand reception hall, live broadcast base, e-commerce platform office, China's top ten designer studios, and teaching points of textile universities to promote research, development, innovation and sales of the industry.

Behind the growth of Shantou's textile and clothing industry is a good business environment that gathers confidence in development. This year, Guangdong Province issued the Implementation Opinions on Further Promoting the High Quality Development of the Textile and Clothing Industry, explicitly supporting Shantou to become bigger and stronger as one of the core areas of the textile and clothing industry in the province.
