South Africa's Restrictions On Chinese Products Failed To Save The Garment Industry
The South African Trade Law Center's research report shows that South Africa has restricted imports of Chinese textiles for 15 months, and imports of Chinese products also declined by 48% in the first year. However, the South African local garment industry, which had strongly appealed to restrict Chinese products, did not benefit from it.
According to the report, the reason is that South African retailers are unable to get enough products from China, and then they go to Indonesia, Bangladesh and other countries, and do not take care of local enterprises. In addition, foreign clothing imports are limited, and South African clothing manufacturers are forced to adopt poor quality local products, and often fail to get goods in time. South Africa's clothing department store chain has reduced its clothing business by 30% to 40%. Insiders pointed out that the low competitiveness of South African textile industry is an important reason for the clothing industry to face the crisis. Today, South African enterprises are generally faced with the difficulties of rising costs, electricity shortages, and cooling the consumer market. However, the Ministry of trade and industry of South Africa is still planning to extend import restrictions on textiles. Local garment enterprises have expressed the hope that the Ministry of trade and industry will consider this matter carefully.
