    Popularizing Green IT Should Be Driven By Profits.

    Unisys, a IT technology and service provider, points out that it is not enough for enterprises to further implement green IT policy. It is not enough to simply use external laws and regulations and corporate citizenship responsibilities. A more effective entry point is to make enterprises understand the economic benefits brought by green IT.


    Liu Yingjie, director of China Unisys, global outsourcing and technology service, said that when CIO pondering over a IT policy, technology and plan, its first consideration is its operational and economic benefits. Now the IT budget is decreasing, and the measurement of input and output is more important.

    CIO, of course, will fully agree with and support environmental awareness. In principle, if he wants to invest more in green enterprises without giving corresponding economic returns or affecting operational efficiency, it is estimated that many IT will hesitate to do so. Even if there are regulations, enterprises will only tend to meet the minimum standards.


    Liu Yingjie said, in fact, the implementation of green IT can achieve great economic and operational benefits. CIO can plan and formulate an effective green IT strategy from the following 4 aspects, so that the surrounding environment and enterprises can achieve a win-win environmental protection effect.


    How many servers does the company have?


    The large number of low cost and large capacity servers in large data centers is increasing. This has caused serious management problems. The popularity of blade servers has intensified this. The number of servers has exceeded the actual number of data centers in many cases, and the expenses for managing and cooling such redundant servers are increasing.

    It is a natural move to reduce the number of servers according to actual needs, and this can also substantially reduce the cost of energy consumption.


    Do enterprises fully utilize their IT infrastructure?


    According to a server utilization survey conducted by Unisys on Western European market, the utilization rate of most institutions is very low, generally only 5% to 10% of capacity.

    The company estimates that its annual energy consumption is equivalent to the total energy consumption of 98000 households, which is almost the size of Southampton (Southampton), which accounts for 9% of the energy consumption of the data center and 130 thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, similar to that of 9000 ordinary British households.

    According to a model of Unisys, if the financial institution adopts the appropriate green IT policy, it can reduce energy consumption by 4 million US dollars a year and reduce CO2 emissions by 6%.


    In the future, environmental protection, energy conservation and emission reduction will become the focus of national monitoring. For Chinese enterprises, "environmental protection and energy conservation" will be an unavoidable problem.
