Essex Leather Industry Focuses On Developing Its Own Brand
Recently, the newsletter issued by the US embassy in Ethiopia said that Ethiopia has developed its own brand in the global leather market in order to get higher profits. In New York, Paris, Tokyo and other global fashion centers, customers of purse drums will find the name of the new brand "Taytu" in the shop of women's bags in Gu Xi and Chanel. "The Ethiopian government supports exports of finished leather products with high added value, rather than semi-finished products." Taytu trade general manager Salpi Nalbandian said so.
Taytu leather products sales alliance was founded in 2006, when the Ethiopian government identified leather industry as a huge potential and profitable industry. The sales Union is responsible for promoting products for the 12 leather goods manufacturers of Ethiopia. Its sales growth has increased from US $25 thousand in the first year to US $85 thousand in the fiscal year. In the past 5 months of this fiscal year, Taytu has received orders from 70 thousand dollars abroad.
Meanwhile, Taytu stores in the capital city of Addisababa are also booming due to their overseas market entry. The Ethiopian leather product company, called Jonzo, is also planning to enter the leather shoes market. The company's main products are leather goods and handbags, and some products are promoted by Taytu. Solomon Yesuf, general manager of Jonzo, hopes to export footwear products to Brown shoe company, headquartered in Saint Louis, USA in 2009.
The United States Agency for international development, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and other organizations are helping Ethiopia develop its leather processing and brand promotion.
