08 Decline In Net Imports Of Textiles And Clothing In The United States

According to the US Department of agriculture report, after ten years of continuous growth, the net trade of textile and apparel in the United States in the past 2008 years showed a downward trend.

The total import of fiber products in 2008 was only 18 billion 500 million pounds (equivalent to unprocessed fibers), the lowest in four years.

Exports of fiber products continued to decline to about 4 billion pounds, the lowest in 12 years.

As a result of the decrease in imports in 2008, the net trade of fiber products has dropped for the first time since 1996, to 14 billion 500 million pounds, down 7% from 2007.

Cotton imports remain the largest in net imports in 2008.

The net import ratio of cotton products is 58%, the proportion of man-made fibres is 35%, and the rest proportion is composed of flax, wool and silk products.

In 2008, the proportion of net trade in cotton and man-made fiber textiles and clothing in the United States dropped sharply.

Cotton trade decreased by 7% in 2008, and trade in man-made fibres decreased by 9%.

The net trade of other fiber products is slightly lower than that of 2007.
