Cotton Imports Rise In Pakistan

The floods damaged 2 million bales of cotton, and the affected cotton area reached 700 thousand acres (283279 hectares). Traders said Pakistan had to import up to 3 million packs of cotton to make up for the gap.

Traders said imports came mainly from the United States and India.

Although Pakistan is the fourth largest cotton producer in the world, it still needs to import 150-200 million bales of cotton annually.

According to authoritative estimates, floods have caused 15% of Pakistan's cotton crops to be destroyed and will reduce cotton production to 1 million 900 thousand tons.

The International Cotton Advisory Committee secretariat said in a statement that the most optimistic estimate is that all areas of cotton in the whole cotton producing area are destroyed by cotton, and that the loss of pests and diseases after floods will further expand the losses.

Because of the uncertainty of cotton losses, the Secretariat reduced the output of cotton in Pakistan from 15% to 2 million 200 thousand tons in the past 2010-2011 years to 1 million 900 thousand tons.

Pakistan is one of the largest cotton producers in the world except China, India, the United States and Brazil. Chinese cotton textile enterprises import large quantities of cotton yarn from Pakistan every year.

This year, due to the impact of flooding in 80 years, cotton production in Pakistan has been greatly reduced. It is expected not only to affect the export of cotton yarn in the future, but also to increase competition for raw materials in the surrounding areas, which will further exacerbate the contradiction between supply and demand of raw materials for cotton yarn in the region.
