The United Nations Environment Programme said that the amendment to the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants came into effect in August 26th, which will bring 9 kinds of toxic effects to human and animal health and the environment.

In the list of chemicals restricted and prohibited, the total number of chemicals restricted and prohibited in the Convention has reached 21.

The 9 new chemicals, which exist all over the world, are often used as pesticides and flame retardants and widely exist in chemicals used in industrial and agricultural production and urban construction.

Because they are easily absorbed into human and animal organs, they are difficult to decompose, and have the characteristics of pferring to the next generation and showing their hazards after many years. They are bioaccumulative toxic chemicals.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that the 9 toxic chemicals included in the list of chemical substances that are prohibited and restricted by the Convention show that all countries in the world are committed to reducing and eradicating these toxic substances worldwide, which is beneficial to public health, and can promote sustainable development and gain wider benefits from the green economy.

These 9 chemicals include: -

Hexachlorhexane

, beta hexachlorocyclohexane, six bromo two phenyl ether and seven bromo two phenyl ether, four bromo two phenyl ether and five bromo two phenyl ether, ten chloroketone, six brominated biphenyl, Lin Dan, five chlorobenzene, perfluorooctane sulfonate and its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride.

This amendment is the first list of chemical substances restricted and prohibited to use in the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants. The revision of the Convention indicates that governments have put the problem of toxic chemicals on the global agenda.

Under the advocacy of the planning department, the international community adopted the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants in 2001. At that time, the Convention restricted and prohibited the production and use of 12 chemicals, including 8 organochlorine insecticides, including DDT, chlorid, and termite, including 2 industrial chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyls, and 2 by-products of industrial production or combustion including dioxins, which came into effect in November 11, 2004.
