In the Yinfeng cottage factory area in the suburb of Yuli County, Tarim Basin, Xinjiang, I saw a strange scene: more than ten workers wearing white caps, covered with gauze masks, squatting down under the cotton pile like hills, constantly tearing at the cotton, and occasionally picking up "foreign objects" into the cloth pocket behind them.

These foreign bodies, known as "three wires", are the most feared carcinogens in textile enterprises. The impurities and the coloring ability of cotton fibers are inconsistent, which seriously affects the quality of textiles in the process of textile dyeing and printing.

According to some textile enterprises, the phenomenon of customer complaints, claims and termination of contracts caused by three wire mixing is common, causing huge losses to enterprises.

In the use of domestic cotton textile enterprises, picking three silk has become an essential process.

In order to pick out the "impurities" mixed with cotton, textile enterprises spend a lot of manpower and material resources, which cost more than the same weight of gold.

Ma Yan Le, general manager of Yinfeng cotton industry, told me that the process of picking three silk from textile enterprises to cotton processing links can greatly reduce the burden of textile enterprises. This is also an important reason for his cotton to win customers' trust.

He explained: "before processing, picking three silk is relatively easy; and after processing, these fibers are crushed by the cotton gin and become smaller, and the naked eye is hard to find. The textile links are very troublesome.

There are nearly 20 workers in Yinfeng cotton industry. More than half of them are specially responsible for picking the foreign objects in the cotton pile. At the peak period, we need to pick up three silk, less than 10 people and twenty or thirty people at the time.

Although the cost per ton of cotton increased by tens of dollars, however, the sale price was more than 200 yuan higher than that of the same grade cotton in the market because of the shortage of three silk.
