The Andean Trade Preferences act is due to expire in December 31, 2010.

"Although Congress has agreed to extend the Andean Trade Preferences bill for just six weeks, it has failed to extend the expiry of the trade preferences for 18 months, which can not meet the long-term stability and predictability of the clothing and footwear industry in the United States, because we need to provide consumers with affordable clothing and shoes for the market."

Kevin Burke, President and chief executive officer of AAFA, said.

He said: "when the new Congress starts work next month, Congress must extend the Andean Trade Preferences act and the universal preferential system, and make technical amendments to the wool and cotton trust fund through the pending, carefully pending tariff moratorium in the miscellaneous trade act.

We look forward to the opportunity for Congress to restore these more than 50 non controversial footwear, clothing and textile regulations through these updates, which need not be deleted from the miscellaneous Tariff Act.
