India Has Resumed Cotton Exports Since January 25Th.

Comprehensive media reported on January 24th, a senior government official said on Monday.

India had previously allowed to export 5 million 500 thousand bales of cotton in the market year beginning in October 1st, weighing 170 kilos per pack, but some traders failed to deliver the goods, and the cotton harvest in the main producing area was postponed due to rainfall.

In December, the government of India decided to allow exports of 1 million 900 thousand bags of cotton which were not shipped under the total 5 million 500 thousand package quota, but would be granted to new applicants, rather than those exporters who failed to ship before December 15th.

The deadline for the completion of the new shipment is February 25th.

Supply from India will help make up for the global gap.

Cotton production in large cotton producing countries in China and Pakistan has resulted in a global shortage of supply, and Australian cotton production has also been cut recently.

However, the possibility of exporting more than 5 million 500 thousand bales of cotton in India in 2010-11 is uncertain, because the Ministry of textiles will definitely block such behavior, but the Ministry of agriculture is keen to expand the export quota by 200-300 million bales.

Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said on Friday that India might consider exporting more cotton because its output would exceed its initial estimate, but Saturday's textile minister Dayanidhi Maran denied that more cotton would be exported, saying that soaring raw material prices would damage the local textile industry.

Officials from the Ministry of textiles and agriculture will reassess cotton export quotas in February 10th, after the state-run India Cotton Advisory Committee raised the final estimate of cotton production.

Earlier this month, the India Cotton Advisory Committee estimated that the cotton output in 2010-11 would reach 32 million 900 thousand packs, but the Ministry of agriculture considered such production too high due to increased planting area.

India produced 29 million 500 thousand bales of cotton in 2009-10.

Over the past year, cotton prices in India have more than doubled, to 44600 India rupees per 356 kilograms, due to strong export demand.
