So when she was in college, Gu Yi chose the dress design major of Northwest Textile College. Gu Yi did not show a particularly amazing talent while studying in the school. However, her enthusiasm and persistence in dress design gave her the attention of the teacher. Slowly, she had her own design style and ideas, and her way of design was gradually expanded.

Beginning in 1989, Gu Yi was the designer of Jiangsu Sanyou group. Her design style has a strong Chinese flavor. Every part of the decoration has a distinct outline and rich colors. Her design style has been affirmed by the market very quickly, and she is also the chief designer of Sanyou group.

After many years of precipitation, Gu Yi's design is becoming more and more mature, and has more and more flavor. She is good at using many texture effects as the basic elements of design. It is also considered by experts to be a unique design method. In 1999, she was awarded the title of the top ten fashion designers in China.

In 2003, she went to Paris to hold a "Fashion China" exhibition of contemporary Chinese outstanding fashion designers. At last, the Chinese native designer had her own brilliance on the international stage.
