The Science Effect Drives The Fashion Industry

    2011/6/4 9:47:00 42

    Scientific Effect Fashion Industry

Reporter: as far as I know, the 3 dimension human body scanning is not originally applied in the clothing industry. So where does this idea come from the application of this technology in the field of costume design?

Susan Ashdown: this scanner was originally used in the entertainment industry, like many of the exciting movie effects we see today, that is, by scanning the actors' bodies to catch the characters.

    3D model

The earliest 3 dimensional human body scanner appeared in a movie studio in Losangeles, USA.

Reporter: what degree is the 3D scanning technology developed to? Is it still in the research stage? Or is there a company that has used this technology to make a profit?

Susan Ashdown: to a large extent, it is still in the research stage, but I think we have made exciting progress now, because when we do not yet understand what we want to get from this technology, it has led people to write software for the technology and serve the clothing industry.

Just like some of the speeches I have just heard, it is really heartening because these researchers have shown us the future of the industry, which is what we are striving for.

Now hardware is also developing, such as how to integrate data for 3D model.

The whole system is being standardized. The operation of the system requires a combination of cameras and lights, concentrating all of these on one person.

Now we see that the 3 dimensional model is derived from 2 dimensional photographs at different angles, but the final integration model is the same as the 3 dimensional model.

I think the technology is not particularly accurate, but I believe that our existing research directions and our functionality from 3 dimensional scanning and 3 dimensional analysis have reached a mature level.

Interviewer: how long do you think the 3D scanning technology will take?

    Industrialization

    Is application possible?

Susan Ashdown: This is a very interesting question. If you asked me this question 10 years ago when I just started researching 3D body scanning technology, I might say that in the next 5 years, we will enter the scanning equipment, get the scan results and complete the production of garments.

5 years will be easy to do.

But now we see that it has not yet happened. Although the initial scanning research has begun, the development of the whole system has not continued. The 3D body scanning technology has begun to expand to other directions for other purposes.

Professionals regard the development of this technology as their lifelong career, and what kind of industry they explore will adopt such technology.

I think the clothing industry is a relatively conservative industry. We need to integrate various factors and resources, and the adoption of new technology can be regarded as an adventure.

I think we will see great changes within three or four years. Two years ago I would say that, I can not foresee the future, but I can say that exciting things are happening.

Reporter: how do you view the future of this technology?

Susan Ashdown: our research direction is quite different from that of 10 years ago. I think we will see more ways to make clothes. Those are not advanced customization or clothing in the mall. They can be chosen according to body shape, help you find out the way to understand your body, use virtual mode to make you understand whether those clothes are suitable for your shape, or the effect of different clothes on you.

Reporter: do you think this technology will only be applied in the design field, or will it replace the tailor one day?

Susan Ashdown: This is a very difficult question to answer, because it depends on many factors. Apart from the development of technology, I think that hand made clothing will always exist, people need its existence, human factors and technical factors that are different from each other are never completely unified. Each of our clothes will not come from the same technology or some people.

Speaking of substitution, it seems a bit worded. I think everything is changing. Today people are controlled by many factors, including the relationship between clothing and clothing. There is a certain responsibility to fulfill. The way we consume clothing makes us need to spend more resources. The rapid development of garment industry has also led to the increasing demand for clothing.

This will eventually lead to the deepening of industrialization, and the interaction between clothing producers and wearers is becoming less and less.

However, I think that some factors are now forced by the needs of the environment.

    Consumer

The relationship between clothing and clothing has evolved into another trend.

In the past, it was now possible that some individuals were made by hand and completed by some kind of technology, but either way added value to clothes. By this way, a completely different fashion cycle can be formed, that is, we will have some clothing for a longer time and reduce consumption.

The development of industry is influenced by many factors, but in general, this will be an exciting time in the development of this industry.
