The Nikkei index fell 2%, the Australian S&P/ASX 200 index fell 2.6%, the Korea composite index fell 3.9%, and the New Zealand NZX-50 index fell 1%.

The euro traded at US $1.4318 against the US dollar, and New York's foreign exchange market ended on Thursday at $1.4334.
