Exports amounted to US $8 billion 300 million, a decline of 10.9% compared with July, and 1 to August total exports of US $60 billion 800 million, up 33.7% over the same period last year. In August, the import volume was US $9 billion 100 million, up 10.7% over the previous month, and the total import volume from 1 to August was 67 billion 20 million US dollars, up by 25.4% over the same period last year.

Vietnam's trade deficit in August (2011) was about 800 million US dollars, which accumulated 1 to August deficit of 6 billion 220 million US dollars, accounting for 10.23% of total exports.

In August, the decline in export volume was mainly due to the decline in exports of precious metals and precious stones, and its export volume dropped to 82% from 1 billion 100 million US dollars in July, and dropped by 82%. Besides, the amount of some major export products also decreased, including the export volume of textile garments for us $1 billion, and the export volume of raw oil and aquatic products were 750 million and 590 million US dollars respectively.

In August, the main imports were 967 million US dollars of gasoline and 540 million of cloth.
