Sales Of Shoes And Clothing In Hongkong Increased In May

The census and Statistics Department of Hongkong announced today (July 3rd) the retail trade in May.

The provisional estimate is 36 billion yuan, up 8.8% annually.

After deducting the price changes during the period, the total retail sales volume increased by 5.8% over the year.

The revised value of total retail sales in April was estimated at $35 billion 700 million, an increase of 11.4% per year, while the total sales volume increased by 7.6%.

The number of sales of miscellaneous consumer durables increased by 52.7% in May.

The other recorded categories include vehicle and auto parts (41%), electrical and photographic equipment (20.1%), supermarket goods (9.1%),

Related products and other clothing accessories (6.9%), department store products (5.9%), miscellaneous consumer goods (2.1%), fuel (1.3%), and

(0.7%).

During the month, furniture and fixtures (6.7%), food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco (4.2%), and jewellery, watches and clocks and gifts (2.9%) were recorded on a year-on-year decline.

In the first five months, the value of total retail sales increased by 13.5% year on year while the total sales volume increased by 9.1%.

Although the employment market situation and the inbound tourism industry continue to provide some support for retail business, but in the gloom of the European debt crisis, the external environment is very bad, which may affect consumer confidence, so be vigilant.
