Qi Junyuan, A Post-90S Top Student In The Entrepreneurial Circle
Qi Junyuan thinks that Teambition defines itself.
Sitting in the conference room of Teambition headquarters in Shanghai, he introduced himself to reporters like this.
Before answering the first question, he had been silent for a long time. There were not many small business startups eager to reveal what he was doing at once.
Outside the glass curtain wall is
Teambition
Daily work - the desk rows around the circular office, and employees tap keyboards and quiet exchanges.
The orderly Empire came from Qi Junyuan, a company registered with his classmates in the 20 year old age.
Teambition, a team collaboration tool, is born out of this college entrepreneurship project. Its goal is to easily share and discuss tasks, documents, sharing, schedules and other tasks in the work by helping the team.
After obtaining several rounds of financing from Aurora Borealis, Gobi investment, IDG and Pangu, Teambition won strategic investment in Tencent in August 2016, which is one of the few strategic investments of Tencent in the field of enterprise SaaS.
In May 26th, the latest data released by Teambition at the 2017 customer conference held in Shanghai showed that more than 3 million users had collaborate with Teambition through Teambition, and their customers covered 38 industries, including TMT, advertising, education and professional services. Among them, there were many giant companies such as Meizu and Meizu.
And if we observe Qi Junyuan's curriculum vitae more carefully, we will find that this 90 year boy has always had a "top student" life.
From kindergarten to primary school grade three, Qi Junyuan went home after school every day to do his homework and play chess with his father.
When he was 8 years old, a miracle happened: in a go game, the opponent played a game of chess, and Qi Junyuan, who was ill at ease, replayed the chess game directly.
He did not even mention his performance in school. He was even the target of "scramble" by teachers of different subjects.
Olympiad, chemistry experiment, biology experiment, campus football team...
As long as the teacher comes to ask, he does everything.
"From that time, I felt that I had developed a habit: I should do better than others.
My major characteristic is basically not to say no, what other people tell me what to do, what opportunities they have, or what opportunities I see, familiar and unfamiliar.
This habit has been maintained until now, so long as it is the right thing to do, then work hard to do it well.
When Qi Junyuan said this, there was no excess expression on his face.
And starting a business is not an opportunity to be placed before him.
Influenced by his father as a university professor, Qi Junyuan's earliest dream was to become a research worker. He spent almost all his junior and senior life in biology laboratory.
In junior high school, he participated in the project of "reducing the cost of hepatitis detection" in the Institute of immunology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In high school, he participated in the subject of the Chinese Academy of Sciences cell research, "how to identify the sex of birds in the parrot family", and took the research results of the latter subject to Singapore to participate in the competition. However, foreign professors rely on advanced equipment and have already developed a better method.
It was the first time that he had an intuitive understanding of the importance of scientific research conditions.
In senior three, Qi Junyuan took part in the self enrollment examination of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
During the half winter vacation between the written examination and the interview, he carefully ponder the professional direction at that time. It was at that time he decided to start a business with the curve to save the nation: "open a company, make a lot of money, buy the best equipment, and let those scientists who are more powerful than us do research."
So after obtaining the qualification, he did not choose the biology department as his relatives and friends thought, but entered the business administration of the Antai Institute of economics and management.
Like many college students who are interested in starting an undertaking,
Qi Jun yuan
In the freshman year and sophomore year, he took part in all kinds of entrepreneurial planning competitions enthusiastically, but he gradually came back to the point: "we don't really want to start a company."
He earned a lot of money in the competition, and he paid enough for the calculation. He gathered two talents of information security academy and set up his own company.
Qi Junyuan and his partners initially worked on a project of health records management, allowing users to upload medical records and other information to the online file platform, so as to realize the networking, online management and online diagnosis of medical records.
At that time, the project invested 2 million 500 thousand yuan in angel investment, and set up a team of 30 people.
Teambition is actually an internal working tool developed by Qi Junyuan at first to make up for the lack of team management ability.
Because it is very practical, Teambition is popular among teachers and business friends around him through word of mouth.
Unconsciously, Qi Junyuan found himself upgrading the Teambition day and night to meet the growing needs of users.
"My personality is the same.
The teacher told you what it would be like if you had something like that; the next door company's school leader said if you did so well, someone else wrote an email saying that I liked your stuff very much, and if anything was good, I thought they were right and tried to solve their problems.
By the second half of 2012, the function of Teambition was becoming more and more perfect, and Qi Junyuan suddenly discovered that he had not touched the project of health record for a long time.
At first, two partners who worked together to make health records went to Beijing. One graduate went to a graduate school. The medical school students in the group had not come to work for a long time. Almost all the villas left for him to start his own business were Li Qiang, who was recruited for the health record, and later became the co-founder of Teambition.
He wanted to send an e-mail explanation to his team members, but eventually he didn't send the email.
"No decision has to be made to kill (health records). Venture companies often do not make decisions."
The Internet environment in 2011 restricted the development of online medical projects objectively, but Qi Junyuan did not want to talk more about the embarrassment in the pformation period.
Although I feel sorry for the first establishment of health records partners, he can only choose to let go and move on.
In retrospect, Qi Junyuan felt that this failed entrepreneurial project turned out to be an opportunity for him to become a Teambition. "The psychological foundation of Teambition lies in the fact that most businesses, most teams and most people have a strong sense of anxiety about their goals.
Because no one will set a very easy goal for themselves, so enterprises are always pursuing their own goals, missing opportunities to achieve their goals, and challenging greater goals.
If someone can help them on the way to achieve goals, people will be very open to them. "
The "help" provided by Teambition is to create a knowledge innovation network through collaborative tools, so that users can better achieve their goals.
The more complex the knowledge topology of a company, the stronger the company's innovation capability.
Collaboration is the process of achieving a common goal for a group of people. The core idea is to form a very complex knowledge network and connect the internal network with the external network.
Qi Junyuan has studied this subject in a research program of undergraduate students in an undergraduate university. This impressive view is his original motive power for developing Teambition.
Early Teambition was developed by Qi Junyuan and Li Qiang.
In order not to use the money that should be spent on health records, he spent his senior year studying programming in his spare time, and Li Qiang wrote the front-end code for two people, and one wrote the back-end code.
When Teambition released the first official version in June 18, 2013, Qi Junyuan wrote 220 thousand lines of code and deleted 300 thousand lines.
He said that entrepreneurs should have such self reliant awareness. "It's almost impossible for you to get help when you really need help. Basically, everyone else is icing on the cake, and no one will help you solve problems at the critical time".
After joining college roommate Jiang Xiang (later Teambition co founder), Teambition team began to take shape.
In fact, it is precisely because of Qi Junyuan's self-learning front end has accumulated rich programming experience, in the future can be successfully screened and recruited excellent engineers, to create the front-end architecture needed by Teambition.
Qi Junyuan saw the possibility of this product before the official version was launched. When Teambition was in the testing room, there were 200 teams registered in two weeks. There were student associations, students who needed to do group work, and teachers who had friendship support. When Teambition was connected to the public network, more than 6000 people applied for internal testing within two months, and Qi Junyuan still felt incredible.
The first explosive attention of this team collaboration tool was in Shenzhen's "36 krypton open day" in September 2012.
Qi Junyuan, who spent two or three days without sleep, was thinking about going to see some food on Binhai street in Hongkong after the product was released. But it was found that because of the high rate of visits, all the servers of Teambition were down. They had to go back to their homes to deal with bug. The first time to visit Shenzhen was to soak up the soup.
Qi Junyuan said that the rest of the year was always in a state of trepidation. "Real commercialization began in the second half of 2014, and our structure and the state of the company as a whole matured."
Over the past two years, Teambition's customers and revenues have increased by 200% to 300% per year.
After COO Wang Yaqian joined the team, the number of employees increased rapidly from 50 to 200 in 2016.
Qi Junyuan said that he had been able to break through all kinds of entrepreneurial difficulties, but instead, he began to have more and more strong sense of crisis when the company became bigger and bigger and customers became more and more.
Meanwhile, as Teambition became more and more famous, Qi Junyuan found that he was being labeled as a "post-90s entrepreneur".
"People doubt it, but they will not strike a child on the surface. Who is so bad to face others?" this shy boy seldom smiles.
He said that when investment institutions first invested in Teambition, it took a long time to complete their deliveries, which should be because investors wanted to see whether young people were acting on a reliable basis.
Qi Junyuan understands this very well, but he does not feel that his CEO status is any different because of his age.
Perhaps it is for this reason that he revisited the meaning of CEO in a more serious manner.
Recently, Qi Junyuan has not used the word "manage" in the company. Instead, he used "lead": "the management team we understand is that I can do more with limited resources than others, which is good for managers and good career managers, but this is not what start-up companies need.
about
Venture company
For example, if you fail to achieve your goals, you will fail.
So the word "leader" will give you a strong feeling that I am going to take a group of people to achieve a goal, which is to serve that goal; if the goal is right, we must do it, no matter how much resources we have.
This dedication and dedication to his company made Qi Junyuan a more independent person in his business circle.
It is not that no one feels that he is not smart enough to be immersed in his work or invest in making quick money, but he feels that it is precisely because of this that others are willing to give him this friend.
Many of Qi Junyuan's college classmates went to the financial industry after graduation. He usually liked to listen to their big market logic and big figures at the gathering, and wondered how many bricks and tiles they had added to the bottom of the big business in Pyramid.
More often than not, he reaffirmed his path. "When I talk with my classmates, I feel that I should be much more comfortable than their work. They have no way to make decisions about what is right and wrong. I can make decisions about what is right and wrong."
"Why do you think starting a business is hard work?"
When you solve a problem, it is because you want to solve the problem; if you don't want to solve the problem, just cut it off. "
In Qi Junyuan's narration, there is no pain drama, only plain narration is the case, with the same "excellent student" as always.
When asked who his ideal mentor was, Qi Junyuan did not answer directly.
But he mentioned that he had just watched Zuckerberg's commencement speech at Harvard University, and said he was very satisfied with what he said, "let the society have a stronger sense of mission". He wore a black T-shirt with a slogan "Crazy One" (that crazy person), and the letter "O" is the logo of Apple Corp.
Sometimes when he finished working overtime on Sunday, he drove to Disney park to see the fireworks.
He always could not help imagining how Water Disney would feel if he was standing in the crowd. "Because he has started his head, there are so many people who" lighten up their dreams in the end ". That's the best feeling.
"The best feeling for me is that Teambition can create a lot of things as a company, and these things have something to do with me.
It's nice to have a stop inside.
That's the feeling. "
He said.
