American outdoor equipment famous for its environmental protection concept brand Patagonia (Patagonia) recently announced that it would further increase the proportion of its factories and commodities through fair trade certification.
According to the world clothing and shoe net, Patagonia joined the fair trade certification (Fair Trade Certified) project launched by the United States Fair Trade Organization in 2014. Most of the companies involved in fair trade certification projects are located in Asia, and Patagonia is the first to bring the project to Mexico, Central America and the United States.
According to the relevant provisions of the project, enterprises need to pay a certain additional fee for each commodity produced by a fair trade certification factory, which is used to raise the living standard of workers and narrow the gap between statutory minimum wage and maintenance wage. These funds will be used to establish a foundation jointly owned by workers, and the committees elected by the workers will determine their specific purposes, including salary increase, training or establishment of child welfare institutions.
The United States Fair Trade Organization said that this project is particularly important for developing countries such as Bangladesh and Kampuchea. A large number of foreign enterprises build their production facilities in these countries, and the salaries of local workers are likely to be the sole source of livelihood for the family. There are more than 1000 companies that sell fair trade certification products worldwide, covering more than 30 product categories.
