Japanese fashion brand UNIQLO expects India to surpass China and its home to become its largest market, although it will take ten years for the country to become a major market and sourcing base for the largest fashion retailers in Asia.
Tadashi Yanai, founder and chief executive of UNIQLO, has said India may become "the world's first and most exciting market", even though he has not given a timetable.
Recently, UNIQLO said it plans to launch its first store in New Delhi, India, at the end of this year. The head of the store said UNIQLO had to open many small franchised stores at Gurugram in CyberHub, and open stores in Vasant Kunj's Kunj (shopping center), Saket DLF Place and Noida India shopping center.
The total number of new stores could reach 60 thousand square feet, which will make UNIQLO the largest fashion store in India, the head of the store said. At present, the largest store in India is a 5 storey store with a total area of 51300 square feet in the southern part of Mumbai by the Spanish fashion brand Zara, followed by H&M's Noida store in India, with an area of 40 thousand square feet.
Yanai did not comment on the size of the store, but he said, "you know, there are nearly 1 billion 300 million people in India, but there are not many large modern stores."
India's fast fashion is a challenging emerging market. UNIQLO's move will grab India's fast fashion market share with Zara and Swedish fashion brand H&M. In addition, Yanai believes that India may become a large global sourcing base outside UNIQLO, besides China and Bangladesh.
