DPD Launches Micro Warehouse + Electric Bicycle Service To Ease Express Pressure

On August 21st, DPD express recently launched a new urban logistics mode in the city of Constance, Germany, namely, micro warehouse + electric bicycle service, effectively relieving the pressure of urban delivery.

According to DPD Gerd Seber, Department Manager of urban logistics and sustainable development in Germany, Constance is very old, with narrow downtown streets and difficult access to traditional trucks, and trucks are not allowed to enter the city centre after 10 a.m. Therefore, the micro warehouse + E-bike mode has effectively relieved the pressure of urban delivery.

Statistics show that DPD (Depp express) belongs to Geopost group, one of the three major parcel express operators in Europe. It was founded in 1976 and is headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany. In 2001, France acquired a 35% stake in DPD, the second largest parcel service provider in Germany, and became a single largest controlling shareholder. DPD has the world's largest transport network and is one of the five largest express groups in the world.

It is reported that in April this year, DPD rented a parking space at the parking lot in downtown Constance, Germany. After the truck was parked, it was delivered by an electric bicycle. After that, DPD changed the freight car to the container parking in the parking lot, which served as the urban micro warehouse, which was both the overnight storage point and the transfer point of the package.

At present, freight cars are transported 2~3 times a day, and the parcels are sent to the micro warehouse. Electric bicycles use replaceable batteries, which are sent to the micro warehouse with packages in the morning. Next, the micro warehouse will be equipped with solar panels to directly charge bicycles at the scene.

The media noticed that DPD express company was also paying attention to environmental protection while introducing new urban logistics mode, and using electric bicycles to deliver parcels. In early August, DPD announced that it would invest 3 million 200 thousand euros in zero emission distribution in Ireland. It plans to build a new power distribution station in Dublin and promote electric vehicles in its daily operation.
