William Kimbrell commended: "the Chinese government's cotton reserves are low, so China needs to increase imports to meet the domestic shortage of cotton. Compared with the last cotton year (as of July this year), China's cotton imports grew by about 70% over the same period last year. However, as the United States faced higher tariffs since July last year, the share of US cotton in the Chinese market has been affected, from 45% in 2017/18 to 18% in 2018/19. Meanwhile, China's cotton imports from Brazil (+480%), Australia (+97%) and India (+127%) have increased.

Although the share of US cotton in China has declined, there is no doubt that the United States is still the third largest importer of China's cotton market, and China is still the second largest export destination of the United States. "The quality and scale of Chinese enterprises are comparable to those of other countries. Chinese enterprises also enjoy high reputation in fulfilling their contracts. These advantages may make it difficult for us apparel importers to leave China. The fall of the renminbi against the US dollar will help offset the tariff. " William Kimbrell pointed out that although the current situation is challenging, Sino US trade is still inextricably linked.
