Just Know That 3M Is Out! The Mask Maker Entered The 300 Billion Year.
During the Spring Festival, because of a sudden new virus pneumonia, masks became the most demanding and most scarce items.
The first selling of the main channels is the 3M valve respirator -- in China and around the world, the 3M mask is a loud sign.
Then, some people recovered and rushed to buy Honeywell's KN95 mask. The product was broken off immediately.
3M is known to all, but little is known about Honeywell. In fact, Honeywell does not lose 3M, and the two are the top brand of mask in the world.
Mask operation under epidemic situation
After the outbreak of pneumonia, Honeywell and 3M took the initiative to ensure supply at the first time.
In January 22nd, Honeywell said the team of personal safety protection equipment had adjusted the order process and replenished it in time.
On the same day, 3M said that during the Spring Festival, the company continued to maintain production and replenish its products, and promised prices to be stable.
Throughout the Spring Festival, 3M has been producing 7x24 hours worldwide, and Honeywell has not stopped production.
Outside the production line, the remaining masks were also donated.
In January 26th, 3M donated 80 cases of medical masks, 1330 cases of respirators and hand sanitizers to Wuhan urgently. In January 31st, Honeywell also donated 500 thousand KN95 masks in stock to Wuhan.
Under the epidemic situation, the masked giants are unanimous, do not stop production, do not increase prices, and give priority to the areas where the epidemic is serious.
Masks are just a drop in the bucket.
People rush to buy 3M and Honeywell because they occupy the top two seats in the global mask industry, but for them, the mask is not the main business.
As an industrial giant, the families of these two companies are huge.
3M is the abbreviation of "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing", or "Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Corporation", which was founded in 1902. Starting from mining, over the next one hundred years, we have launched over 60 thousand products for business users and consumers, including household transparent tapes and convenience stickers.
At present, the market value of 3M is 90 billion US dollars.
3M has four major business sectors, namely, safety and industrial products, transportation and electronics, medical health and consumer goods, and masks belong to "consumer goods". According to the financial report, the total revenue of 3M in the fourth quarter of 2019 was US $8 billion 100 million, of which the revenue of consumer goods business sector was US $1 billion 270 million, which accounted for a relatively small amount.
Honeywell was founded in 1885, initially operating electronic temperature regulator and special heater, after purchase through aerospace, automobile manufacturing, security system manufacturing and other fields. There are Honeywell products in airplanes, hotels and hospitals. It is reported that Boeing aircraft 30% of the components are from Honeywell.
At present, Honeywell's total market capitalization is as high as 122 billion 400 million dollars, and its revenue in 2018 is over 40 billion dollars, making it the world's top five hundred top 100 enterprises.
Honeywell has four major business sectors: aerospace group, intelligent building technology group, characteristic materials and technology group, safety and productivity solutions group.
The mask is one of the businesses of the security and productivity solutions group. According to the financial report, Honeywell's revenue was $9 billion 496 million in the fourth quarter of 2019, of which the security and productivity solutions group's revenue was 1 billion 515 million US dollars, accounting for only 15.96%.
The way of "double entry" for masks
Although the mask is only a sideline in 3M and Honeywell, it has grabbed the first and third seats in the Chinese market.
As the first place, 3M has the advantage of first mover.
In 1970s, 3M developed the first particle respirator. In 1984, 3M founded China Limited to take the lead in introducing personal protective products into the Chinese market. On the one hand, it provides free protection training for enterprise workers, and actively participates in the formulation of government protection standards, and creates its own authority.
At the same time, 3M is widely engaged in public welfare. In 2003, SARS, Paralympic Games in 2007 and Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, 3M donated a lot of masks. Slowly, 3M stood the position of "mask and a brother".
Honeywell's personal protection business began after 2008. Since then, it has acquired J Bodry Ann, Jingshi and other safety products companies, thus entering the personal protective equipment industry.
In that year, Honeywell opened the pace of building factories in China, and built individual protection factories in Chuzhou, Jiangxi, Nantong and other places in Anhui. In 2018, Australia and other overseas factories were transferred to Xi'an.
While localizing the factory, it also makes efforts to think about Chinese consumers.
In 2013, when Honeywell safety product, general manager of China and Southeast Asia, introduced Tong Tong Sheng, in order to make the masks and other protective products meet the Chinese body size and needs, Honeywell established a R & D center in China, "gradually set up a database of Chinese individual protection needs, individual model database, and carry out targeted research and innovation".
Engineers went deep into the research and eventually developed a mask that fits the Chinese market.
In a brief introduction to a KN95 level mask, it is said that the actual filtration can reach 98%, which is suitable for 97% of Chinese adults. The face coverage rate and the adhesion rate are all better. In addition, the cotton ear tape is not used for ears, and there is a sponge pad on the nose to prevent glasses from fogging.
Many consumers who used 3M and Honeywell masks told reporters that the gap between them was small in performance, but Honeywell was slightly better in experience.
How do domestic masks grow?
With the increasing consumption of masks in China, 3M and Honeywell are camping, and domestic masks are also ready to fight.
But compared to the two major foreign brands, there is a big gap in the brand, distribution channels and R & D of domestic masks.
In terms of brand, 3M, Honeywell and other giants themselves are endorsements of a brand. There is no such brand in China. Because entry threshold is low, profit margin is only 10%, domestic masks manufacturers are more small and medium enterprises. Statistics show that over half of all personal protective equipment enterprises in China are stuck in scattered, manual workshops.
In the distribution system, both of them attach importance to the construction of channels. 3M is based on the perfect system built by thousands of distributors, extending the sales tentacles to China's vast land.
In terms of R & D, 3M has invested more than 6% of revenue each year. Honeywell also pays great attention to R & D, and 20% of the 11000 Chinese employees are R & D personnel.
In addition, the reporters found that enterprises such as 3M and Honeywell had obvious effect of networking. That is to say, they will start from the experience of aerospace, building and industrial safety, and start R & D innovation from the end of mask materials.
At present, although the domestic mask industry has been born with green shield and robust brand, it still can not match the giants.
In terms of sales volume, domestic masks only account for less than 10% of China's mask industry. From the price point of view, on Tmall, 3M's KN95 respirator sells for 6~8 yuan each, and Honeywell KN95 masks costs 4~6 yuan each, while the domestic general manufacturer's KN95 mask sells at less than 2 yuan.
After experiencing SARS, experiencing haze and experiencing new virus pneumonia, when on earth can China produce its own 3M and Honeywell?
