A Grand Volume Of Animal Migration
There are countless animals in motion all the time on earth. From the agile antelope to the giant whales and tiny butterflies, a large number of animals make long-distance and difficult migrations on land, water and air. Migration is complex and mysterious. How can animals move such a long distance and maintain high accuracy? What is the magic attraction of their final destination? Ben hall is a British natural history expert and a member of Zoological Society of London. He has been engaged in wildlife research for a long time. In his book the great migration: the greatest journey of life on earth, he drew a magnificent picture of animal migration for us.
Those migrating animals are often seen as symbols of change and innovation in human culture. Poet Ted Hughes once said, "these seasonal activities are used to remind us that the earth is still in motion." In the Paleolithic age, people engaged in hunting and gathering learned to follow animals through the grasslands of modern Africa and southern Europe. However, it was not until 150 years ago, especially in recent decades, that scientists began to reveal the secret of animal migration. Nowadays, with the rapid development of electronic products and mobile communication, animal migration research has made great progress. By installing radio transmitters on animals, satellite remote sensing technology enables scientists to accurately locate animals. This technology has been so mature that animals can be found anywhere on the earth.
The great migration: the greatest journey of life on earth is an interesting book. For example, the grey Plover is a global migratory seabird. The tracking record of its nest site in New Zealand shows that it follows a huge "8" shaped route, flying about 64000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean; the leatherback turtle is the longest migratory species among aquatic animals, and it will travel underwater for about 21 months; while the great white shark, which is marked off the coast of South Africa, is not It moved about 200000 kilometers in nine months, from South Africa to Australia and back again. These data are amazing. The ability of animals to migrate is beyond our imagination.
It has to be said that the wildlife migration in East Africa is the most spectacular. At the end of July each year, with the coming of the dry season, millions of wild animals, such as wildebeest and zebra, will form a large migration army. They will march from Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Africa to Masai Mara National Nature Reserve in Kenya, looking for sufficient water and food. This is a long journey of 3000 kilometers. On the way, we not only meet lions and leopards lying in ambush on the grassland, but also cross the Mala River, which is full of crocodiles and hippos. During the migration, a large number of wildebeest will die on the road, and a large number of Colts will be born.
The fundamental reason why animals migrate on a large scale is to survive. Most of East Africa is savanna, and water resources are scarce. Summer is the main rainfall season. As we all know, Africa's savannahs are distributed in the three sides of the tropical rain forest, and the hot and dry season of the tropical grasslands is very obvious and long. However, the African savannah is just divided into the northern and southern hemispheres by the equator. Therefore, if we travel between the two hemispheres, we can ensure that there is sufficient water to maintain life.
Through the great migration of animals, it is not difficult to see that the nature composed of animals, plants and water is a complete chain of life. The animals participating in the great migration are usually divided into the front, the middle and the rear. The first group is 200000 wild zebras, followed by a million wildebeests and 500000 gazelles. Because zebras like to eat high-rise new grass, the middle tender grass is the food of the antelope, and the short grass at the bottom is the delicious food of the small gazelle. After herbivores, there are groups of African lions, cheetahs and other fierce predators.
Animal migration is for the survival and reproduction of the population. What should human beings do in the face of migrating animals? Countries all over the world take different ways to make way for wildlife. For example, North America prefers to dig "under road passage" for wild animals, let frogs, snakes and other small animals walk through tubular culverts, and reindeer, wild sheep and other large animals cross the culvert under the bridge; Europe prefers to build a "Overpass" for large animals, and plant vegetation on it to simulate the natural hillside terrain, which is called by Europeans Green bridge. Some construction projects in the world are not only concerned about large mammals and reptiles, but also begin to consider setting up special passageways for birds and insects. Tibetan antelope is a rare animal living in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau of China. Every summer, groups of Tibetan antelope migrate from east to west. During the construction of the Qinghai Tibet Railway in China, it is considered to "make way" for the migration of Tibetan antelope and other animals, especially for the railway crossing Kekexili and Qiangtang nature reserves. At the same time, according to the living habits and migration rules of wild animals along the line, wildlife channels are set up in corresponding sections to ensure the normal life, migration and reproduction of wild animals.
As the title of this book says, the migration of animals in nature is the greatest journey of life on earth. I think: This is the most amazing performance of life on earth. In the wild times, human beings also moved around in nature, living a "vagrant" life. When human beings entered the civilized society, they began to build houses and settle down, living a farming life. For thousands of years, the people of every continent are basically in a state of "comfortable living". After entering the commodity society, the economic and cultural exchanges between the world are frequent, and the long-distance migration between human beings has begun. In essence, animal migration is for survival, so is human migration? As we move towards a higher stage of civilization, we are far away from animals and nature. This book leads us to rethink this old relationship: animals need human care, and humans can always find the Enlightenment of survival from animals.
