In 2020, the global cotton planting area was 32.2 million hectares, which was 8.08% lower than that of 35.03 million hectares in 2019.

The global cotton production in 2020 will decrease compared with that in 2019, but the consumption will increase on the contrary. The decline of global cotton production in 2020 is mainly due to the decline of several major production countries, the conversion of some crops, unstable weather conditions in some countries, insect attack, export difficulties and other factors.

In 2020, the global cotton production will be 24.852 million tons, down 1.736 million tons compared with that in 2019; the global cotton consumption will be 25.519 million tons, an increase of 3.179 million tons compared with that in 2019.

According to the data of the United States Department of agriculture, the cotton production of China and India will be 6.314 million tons in 2020, ranking the first in the world at the same time; followed by the United States, the cotton output will be 3.256 million tons; Brazil, Pakistan, Uzbekistan will be ranked third, Fourth and fifth, with cotton output of 2613000 tons, 980000 tons and 762000 tons respectively.

In 2019, the global cotton inventory was 21.519 million tons, an increase of 4.113 million tons compared with that in 2018; the global cotton inventory in 2020 was 20.844 million tons, decreased by 675000 tons compared with that in 2019.

In 2020, the global cotton import and export volume increased compared with that in 2019, with the global cotton export volume of 8.999 million tons and the import volume of 8.856 million tons; in 2020, the global cotton export volume was 9.698 million tons, and the import volume was 9.694 million tons.

The United States is the largest cotton exporter in the world. In 2020, the cotton export volume of the United States was 3.375 million tons, accounting for 34.80% of the total global export volume; followed by Brazil, the export volume was 2.177 million tons, accounting for 22.45% of the total global export volume; India ranked third, with the export volume of 1241000 tons, accounting for 12.80% of the total global export volume.

China is the largest cotton importing country. In 2020, China's cotton import volume was 2.395 million tons, accounting for 24.70% of the total global imports; Bangladesh's cotton imports were 1.568 million tons, accounting for 16.17% of the total global cotton imports; and Vietnam's cotton imports were 1.481 million tons, accounting for 15.28% of the total global cotton imports.
