According to LV Tao, director of the Fiber Inspection Institute of Bengbu market supervision and Administration Bureau, China is a major cotton planting country in the world, with a vast cotton planting area. Besides Xinjiang, the main cotton producing areas include Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Hubei and Anhui. Due to different climate and environment, the color difference of cotton is obvious. There is no definite method and equipment for seed cotton color detection. It is difficult to control the color of seed cotton, and there is no data support and technical support for the color corresponding relationship between seed cotton and lint cotton. As a result, it is difficult to process high-grade color grade lint from high-quality seed cotton, and it is difficult to realize "high-quality cotton and good price". Therefore, it is urgent to study the seed cotton color detection method and seed cotton color detector suitable for the actual needs of seed cotton acquisition and processing, and formulate relevant standards.

To this end, Bengbu Fiber Inspection Institute and Anhui University of Finance and economics jointly participated in the development of two industry standards: seed cotton color detection method and seed cotton color detector. Due to the lack of relevant research and no technical achievements for reference, after several rounds of investigation, experiment and judgment, after more than two years, the two industry standards, seed cotton color detector and seed cotton color detection method photoelectric method, were approved by all China Federation of supply and marketing cooperatives and implemented nationwide from March 1, 2021, The two standards have also been funded by Anhui Province Science and technology project "Research on key technology of cotton quality assurance for cotton processing enterprises".

According to director Lu Tao, the implementation of the two standards fills in the blank of seed cotton color detection in China and realizes the quantitative test of seed cotton color value, which is conducive to the state's subsidy to cotton farmers and realize the "high quality cotton and good price"; It is helpful for enterprises to classify seed cotton color, reasonably configure ginning process, improve processing quality and realize "excellent cotton and good use"; It is beneficial to protect the interests of cotton farmers, purchasers and processing plants; It is conducive to promote the quality improvement and industrial development of China's cotton, and enhance the international market competitiveness of China's cotton industry.
