On September 22, the opening ceremony of 2021 Beijing international design week was held in Zhangjiawan design town. As the venue of the event, Beijing future design park is upgraded from the old Tongniu factory building in Beijing. On the same day, the pilot exhibition of Beijing Urban Architecture Biennale was also held in the park. In September alone, Zhangjiawan design town ushered in three major activities, which attracted the attention of the whole country and even the whole world. In the context of the accelerated development of the urban sub center, Zhangjiawan, which is positioned as a design Town, should not be limited to building an office area with new features, but should be developed into a new lifestyle leading area and a gathering area of global creative design resources, so as to drive the high-quality development of the urban sub center." It is no accident that Beijing international design week, Beijing fashion week and other permanent venues have successively chosen to settle in Zhangjiawan. In Zhu Yi's opinion, this is closely related to the deep cultural heritage of Zhangjiawan design town. Historically, the ancient town of Zhangjiawan was born out of water. It is the earliest water land transportation hub in Beijing. It has many important historical resources, such as the ancient town of water transportation, the hometown of Hongxue, and Daji in the suburb of Beijing. The construction of the design town will promote the innovation and leading role of the Grand Canal cultural belt, which will gradually develop into a valuable human ecological space to highlight the culture of the Grand Canal and the ancient town.

As the former industrial zone, Zhangjiawan has accelerated the release of a number of industrial plants in recent years, which has created good conditions for industrial development and provided space for permanent meeting site settlement. Among them, the sandwich panel workshop of Beipao light steel plant has been given a new mission to build the permanent site of Beijing international design week.

"When I first arrived last year, the factory was lifeless, the factory building was dilapidated, and the wall would fall off even at a touch. But now, the steel structure of the permanent meeting site project has been completed, and the modern architecture full of design and technology elements has emerged. In a short period of one year, the speed of change is really impressive!" A Beijing International Design Week staff said.

The construction scale of Beijing International Design Week permanent meeting site is about 17700 square meters, with 6670 square meters underground and 11000 square meters above ground. Among them, the main functions of the first floor underground are underground garage and equipment room, and the main functions of the third floor above ground are exhibition hall, global publishing hall, design center, art store, etc. At present, the keel installation of the external curtain wall of the permanent meeting site has started, and the underground structure has entered the stage of mechanical and electrical installation. It is expected that the facade will be unveiled in late October, and will be officially completed and opened before the end of this year.

Since its establishment in 2009, Beijing International Design Week has been held for 12 times. However, there is no visible content left after the end of the exhibition every year. There is also a lack of space for the centralized display of the new design products and the excellent products of previous years. The completion of the permanent site will solve the above problems. Not only that, but also can make use of the agglomeration effect of the permanent meeting site to attract international top design institutions to settle in and build an international design center.

Zhu Yi introduced that after the permanent site of Beijing International Design Week is completed, it will gather global resources, hold permanent exhibitions in normal time, create resident space for designers, create industrial incubators, and carry out rich and colorful theme activities; During the large-scale activities of the design week, the permanent venue will become the exhibition site, holding various kinds of art exhibitions and other temporary exhibitions, conferences, forums, salons and other design activities. In the future, as a stage for publishing and displaying design, it will become the world's "trend vane". "We plan to gradually build the Design Museum of China into a design museum in China with reference to the successful model of Milan Design Museum in Italy over the past three years."

Zhangjiawan design town not only embraces modern design institutions, but also pays more attention to superb Chinese traditional design skills. As one of the sub venues of 2021 Beijing international design week, Dongfang Yizhen Beijing heritage base, located in Zhangjiawan Design Town, is also open to the public recently. Citizens here can not only enjoy the national intangible cultural heritage project filigree inlaid arts and crafts, but also experience the traditional skills of hand drawing.

As one of the "Eight Wonders of Yanjing", the filigree inlaying technique has been inherited in Tongzhou for a long time. Since the Beijing filigree inlaying factory was established at the site of Confucius Temple in Tongzhou in 1958, the skill of dealing with gold has been inextricably linked with Tongzhou. In the 1990s, the company changed its name to Beijing Dongfang Yizhen silk mosaic factory after restructuring, retaining more than 400 technical backbones, and moved to Zhangjiawan in 2012.

There are 10 exhibition and experience halls and 1 live broadcasting base in the open heritage base. There are product release hall for national craft masters to display and release intangible cultural heritage works, Yanjing bajue boutique Museum for displaying exquisite silk inlaying skills, and the Grand Canal non heritage cultural and Creative Training Institute, etc. There is also a special area where more than 20 inheriting team technicians are invited to perform, teach and lead apprentices, and invite citizens to experience. Thanks to the brand-new stage of Zhangjiawan Design Town, this ancient handicraft traditional skill of filigree inlay can be better protected and inherited, and it will bloom again.
