According to customs statistics, from January to February 2022, China's total exports of textiles and clothing amounted to US $50.202 billion, including US $24.741 billion of textiles (including textile yarns, fabrics and products) and US $25.461 billion of clothing (including clothing and accessories).

From January to February 2022, the export value of textiles and clothing increased by 8.86%, 11.85% and 6.10% respectively, higher than that of 2018-2021.

From January to February 2022, the average monthly export value was US $25.101 billion, a decrease of US $5.11 billion or 16.9% compared with December 2021;

The average monthly export value from January to February in 2021 is 23.094 billion US dollars, which is 3.107 billion US dollars less than that of December 2020, with a decrease rate of 11.9%;

The number of working days from January to February in 2022 is equal to that in 2021,

From January to February in 2022, the volume of textile and clothing export increased less than the same period in 2021.

From January to February in 2022, the exchange rate of US dollar against RMB is at a low level, which shows depreciation compared with the same period in 2018-2021. Does this mean that the purchasing power of overseas markets for Chinese textiles and clothing is increased?

Statistics are only reflected in the amount of money, and the unit price of goods is a variable. Therefore, the increase of export amount on a year-on-year basis can not directly represent the increase in the export volume of textiles and clothing. There are many categories of textiles and clothing commodities, and the quantity units include weight and number, so it is impossible to define them uniformly. Starting from the price of cotton and main related raw materials, this paper compares the increase of export amount and raw material price, so as to speculate the general trend of textile and clothing export quantity change.

The cotton price in 2021 / 22 is at a historical high level, and the cost of raw materials for cotton products is high. Considering the time difference between raw materials and finished products, the average cotton price in Xinjiang is 23080 yuan / ton from October 2021 to February 2022, and the average cotton price in Xinjiang from October 2020 to February 2021 is 15265 yuan / ton, with an increase of 51.2%. Over the same period, the price of polyester staple fiber increased by 18.9%, while that of viscose staple fiber increased by 13.9%. According to rough estimation, the price increase of cotton, polyester staple fiber and viscose staple fiber is greater than that of the same period of January to February 2022. Therefore, the author analyzes that the export volume of textiles and clothing from January to February in 2022 may be less than the same period in 2021.

To sum up, with the gradual recovery of other textile and garment exports and the increasing international competition pressure, China's textile and clothing export market is facing great challenges.
