Guangxi Silkworm "Chip" Emerged

Recently, Guangxi silkworm germplasm resources conservation farm was officially opened in the sericulture technology promotion station of the autonomous region. "The site has the largest number of silkworm germplasm resources in South China, the largest conservation and Utilization Center of subtropical silkworm germplasm resources, and the only silkworm breeding unit in Guangxi." The person in charge of the sericulture technology promotion station of the autonomous region said that the establishment of the seed conserving farm marked the rapid development of the modern sericulture seed industry system in Guangxi, and the prosperity of the protection and innovative utilization of sericulture germplasm resources.

Seed is the "chip" of agriculture. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has paid close attention to the development of seed industry and pointed out the direction for seed industry reform and development on different occasions. In recent years, the breeding of new sericulture varieties and the breeding of improved varieties in Guangxi have made a great difference in the production and management ability of sericulture seed enterprises. The sericulture seed industry chain with "Gui brand" as the main industry chain has been formed quietly.

Germplasm resources are the basis of seed industry development. Guangxi has spared no effort to protect germplasm resources, and has built "Guangxi silkworm germplasm resources protection field" and "Guangxi crop germplasm Nanning mulberry resources nursery". Now, 664 silkworm germplasm resources and 1820 mulberry variety resources have been collected and preserved. "At present, the number of silkworm germplasm resources collected in Guangxi is the second in China, second only to the sericulture Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences." Autonomous Region sericulture technology promotion station responsible person said.

Innovation is the key for seed industry to turn over. Guangxi has bred 26 pairs of excellent silkworm varieties, such as "Liangguang No.2", "Guican No.8", and 10 excellent mulberry varieties such as "guisangyou 12" and "guisang 5". The breeding technology has been improved. At present, the promotion area of mulberry varieties and the rearing amount of silkworm varieties account for 85% and 98% of the total area respectively. "Guangxi sericulture industry innovation, independent breeding of fine varieties, to accelerate the revitalization of the seed industry, promote the upgrading of silkworm varieties in Guangxi and the high-quality development of the industry." According to Wei Wei, chief expert of Guangxi silkworm innovation team, the importance of innovation is self-evident.

The scientific research achievements of sericulture seed industry have been transformed efficiently, and the benefits of seed industry enterprises have been continuously improved. In recent three years, the amount of achievement transformation of new silkworm varieties such as "Guican No.8", "Guican No.5", "guisang No.5" and "guisang No.6" bred by the sericulture technology promotion station of the autonomous region has exceeded 9 million yuan. Among them, "Guican 8" with 5 million yuan has become the most single transfer achievement in the field of domestic sericulture seed industry. "In 2021," Guican No.8 "has been popularized in the whole region, with Cocoon Output of nearly 40000 tons and cocoon sales income of 1.4 billion yuan, becoming an excellent representative of new silkworm varieties." The person in charge of the sericulture technology promotion station of the autonomous region has high hopes for "Guican No.8".

In recent years, the industry chain of Bagui silkworm seed industry has been constantly innovated, and some silkworm seed farms of original institutions have been transformed into vigorous seed enterprises. Under the mode of "cocoon + silkworm breeding", the silkworm breeding enterprises in Guangxi have stepped forward in the "giant cocoon breeding area" mode, and promoted the development of silkworm breeding enterprises in Guangxi Province.
