The "national textile basic safety technical specification" which was promulgated and will be formally implemented in January 1, 2005, for the first time, put the requirements of ecological and environmental protection related to textile safety into the national mandatory standards for the first time, breaking the current situation that the quality standards of textile and garment industry have been stuck in appearance and general physical indicators for many years.

There are four main aspects that affect the safety and health of the textile and apparel in the process of wearing or using: first, the free formaldehyde on the fabric can cause headache, weakness, temperature changes, sensory disturbance, irregular sweating, pulse speed, dermatitis, skin allergy and so on.

Two, some aromatic amine intermediates that remain in the printing and dyeing process of azo dyes are carcinogenic to the human body.

Three, the heavy metals that may remain in textiles are Mercury, nickel, chromium, lead and arsenic.

These heavy metals are mainly derived from dyes, catalysts and accessories such as buttons and zippers for printing and dyeing.

Heavy metal content in clothing not only weakens human immune function, induces cancer, but also causes chronic poisoning and injure central nervous system.

Four is a preservative used for storage and pportation of cotton fibers and wool. It can also be used as thickener for printing paste. Its toxicity can be carcinogenic, and the waste water from textile washing with pentachlorophenol will pollute the environment.

The new standard divides the textile products into three categories: infant type, direct contact with skin type and non direct contact with skin.

The standard not only stipulates the requirement for formaldehyde content in textiles, but also prohibits the prohibition of ammonia dyes, pH value, color fastness and peculiar smell.

For the first time, the textile toxicology test was included in the product testing standard, and it was clearly stipulated that clothing textile fabrics should not contain toxic substances that cause human diseases and canceration.

In the implementation of the new standards, we should take the initiative to strengthen the study and research of new technologies, new processes and new standards.

Factories and enterprises should actively develop all kinds of green raw materials, choose green dyes and advanced finishing technology in the production process, and vigorously develop ecological textiles.

When signing a purchase and sale contract, a foreign trade unit must indicate the requirements for environmental protection and safety, such as the requirements for first class products that conform to the standard of GBl8901 - 2003 "national textile basic safety technical standard".

For suppliers, they should be required to produce test reports for raw materials and accessories. Commercial departments should provide dealers with inspection certificates for inspection of safety and environmental protection items before entering into sales.
