Canada Makes Two Choices For "Made In China"

    2007/9/17 0:00:00 113

According to the Canadian globe and mail, the international community's eyes were once again attracted to Beijing when it announced the third recall of 800 thousand other toys exported from mainland China this summer.

The reasons for the recall of these toys are different: some are due to excessive lead, others because of poor safety.

But before we delete China from the list of suppliers of cheap goods, we should bear in mind five things:

First, toy recall is not fresh. China is not always the root cause of the problem.

People must remember "lawn darts" toys.

This kind of toy invented by the Americans was originally used for daring the children to throw them on the grass, but they often threw darts on their faces.

In 1988, the federal government officially banned the product.

Such events in the 70s of last century also had "Clackers" and the magnet toys produced by Magnetix in 2006, all of which were not related to "made in China" and were also recalled.

Second, "made in China" is not the only source of poor quality products.

People must also remember the French made toys called "Perrier".

In 90s of last century, American research institutes discovered that this product contained benzene, which caused serious carcinogenesis.

The "flint" tyres produced by the United States, which caused 271 deaths due to quality defects, were forced to be banned by the US authorities. The number of recalls was as high as 6 million 500 thousand.

Take another look at Ford Pinto, one of its cars. Experiments show that it is prone to burst when it is hit by a rear car.

There are still many examples to be enumerated. Although there is too much lead in Chinese toys, there has not been a report that claimed death.

Third, compared with other developing countries, Chinese manufacturers are not the worst manufacturers.

"Made in China" made China the third largest exporter in the world after the US and Japan.

Although China's products have been in bad luck recently, the problem has obviously been exaggerated. China exported toys to the United States last year totaling 17 billion 700 million US dollars, and produced about 80% toys in the world.

From this perspective, it is inevitable that some toys are recalled because of quality problems.

Fourth, sometimes it should be condemned not by Chinese manufacturers, but by American designers.

Among the toys recalled to China so far, the 3/4 product is not a manufacturing problem, but a design problem.

For example, the edge of toys is sharp, small and loose parts are easily swallowed by young children, rope lines are injured or even strangled children, and so on. Because of the high lead content of paint spray, the users suffer only about 10%.

It is undeniable that the standards of safety and health in mainland China are lower than those in North America.

However, while some American companies strictly stipulate that Chinese manufacturers must complete the order according to the quality requirements, other American companies do not pay much attention to the quality inspection procedures, but are eager to make the cheap Chinese products to the North American market to make a profit.

Fifth, the Chinese government is improving the quality management standards.

Do not forget that any economy in the world, whether in the past Japan, China, Hongkong or now China, starts from the cheap manufacturing industry; always "nonstandard" first and then improves the quality standard.

Today, this process is also being interpreted in mainland China.

While exporting a lot of footwear, clothing and toys, China has aggressively expanded to other export areas, including chemicals, steel, semiconductors and digital products. Even the European aviation giant Airbus aircraft used its complex aircraft components made in China.

Decades ago, "made in Japan" also once meant "inferior quality".

The scandals of Chinese food, toys and other export products in recent months have greatly damaged the reputation of "made in China".

But there is no need to worry. Time will change everything.
